Meet Yide Cai, playwright of our upcoming Fall Rep show: WHITE PHOENIX. Yide is an immigrant artist from Shenzhen, China, who is always chasing connections across distance. His works include THE RICE EATERS, which debuted Off-Broadway at the 2025 Broadway Bound Theatre Festival and published by 1319 Press; A MIDDLE PASSAGE, Winner of the 50th Annual Off-Off-Broadway Festival and published by Concord Theatricals; STEEPED, in development with Pipeline Theater’s Playlab; O TRUE APOTHECARY, semi-finalist of the Eugene O’Neil National Playwrights Conference. He is the recipient of the EST/Sloan commission. He is also the Chinese translator of plays such as DEAD POETS SOCIETY, BOOK OF WILL, and RABBIT HOLE. He is a fellow of the Laboratory for Global Performance & Politics and a resident artist at Goethe-Institut Boston.

Meet Rachel Beth Greene, playwright of our upcoming Fall Rep show: JESSICA OF VENICE. Rachel is a Boston-based playwright creating explosive and brave works which wrestle with the thorny intersections of gender, sexual, and body politics when power dynamics are pushed to their furthest extremes. Rachel’s plays include JOHN DESERVES TO DIE (New Dramatists’ Princess Grace Award Semi-Finalist, O’Neill New Play Conference Semi-Finalist), JESSICA OF VENICE (National Jewish Playwriting Contest Semi-Finalist, Getchell Award Finalist), POWER PLAY (Lanford Wilson Festival Selection, SheNYC Arts Semi-Finalist), XOXOLOLA (LakehouseRanchDotPng), GUTS (Moonbox Productions), and MARGARET MY NAME (Brandeis University). Two playwrights. Two worlds. One stage.

Boston Playwrights' Theatre’s Fall pairs two that appear as polar opposites on the surface, until both were asked to share their perspective on their , which clarifies more similarities than at first glance.

In “White Phoenix,” Yide Cai fits a decades-long, continent-spanning story of siblings separated by adoption into one room through two actors. One family’s longing for reunion mimics the tangled relationship between and America - a facet you can see and feel.

In “jessica of venice,” Rachel Beth Greene explores a 400-year-old character, usually written off as a selfish daughter, and reimagines her as a curious Hasidic teenager in today’s Orthodox world, hungry for life beyond her community’s walls.

One writes outward from history; while the other reaches back into classic text. Both ask the same question: What is the price of spanning the distance between two worlds?

An epic family drama that spans decades and continents – told by two actors in one room. White Phoenix follows Li CunYi, a Chinese orphan who makes a promise to reunite with his sister, Li CunXin, who is adopted by an American family in the 1980’s. When their parallel journeys finally converge, the long-awaited and fraught reunion between the siblings and their political partners mirrors the conflicted, intense, and incestuous partnership between China and America.

Convening in a forgotten library, a group of Orthodox Jewish schoolgirls discover a banned copy of The Merchant of Venice and become fascinated with Jessica, the rebellious runaway daughter. Most enamored of all is the discontented Shaina, who dreams of a bigger world and crushes on a Christian guy from her driver’s ed class – walking a dangerous tightrope between religious and secular worlds. Set in the present day with Early Modern themes, Jessica of Venice asks what it takes to rip yourself from the home that made you, and what – or who – you destroy on your way out.
