In addition to her myriad contributions to the Boston theater landscape, Janet Bailey was a longtime faculty member in Boston University’s Arts Administration master’s program. We are so saddened to learn this news.

It is with profound sadness that Commonwealth Shakespeare Company acknowledges the passing of Janet Bailey, a long-time friend, donor, and advisor to CSC, whose impact in Arts Administration is felt by so many in our industry.

We honor her extraordinary legacy—one of creativity, courage, mentorship, and a transformative belief in the power of the Arts.

Thank you for being Boston theatre’s biggest fan, Larry.

Sad to pass on the news that Larry Stark, longtime Boston theater critic and champion of Fringe Theater, passed peacefully on Friday, May 1. He was 93. We will post his obituary when it runs this week. His close friend Lee VanderLann says he is planning a memorial service and we will post when we get the information.

From the Theater Mirror:

Once dubbed the “Dean of alternative theater critics,” Larry Stark began reviewing professional theater in 1966 as a writer for Boston After Dark. In 1994, he launched Theater Mirror, one of the country’s first online review websites. In 1997, Larry co-founded the Independent Reviewers of New England (IRNE), a collection of volunteer theater reviewers devoted to recognizing actors, directors, choreographers, and designers for excellence in their craft through the annual IRNE Awards. The 14-member organization played a vital role in Boston’s theater community for 23 years, especially in reviewing the lesser-known fringe companies.
