The Chai Collective

Giving life to Jewish stories through the arts.

02/10/2026

The Chai Collective was also involved in the CASTING for this incredible Australian Jewish feature film An Australian Jewish Feature Film with Adrian scouting and casting many of the youth roles in this film (he also makes a cameo appearance as a rabbi!). The film premieres at the Jewish International Film Fest in Sydney and then Melbourne and follows the story of two friends navigating life as young Jewish Australians in the wake of October 7 and the vile antisemitism that followed it. We’ve been a little quiet on socials this year - but we’ve still been busy! Back in April, Adrian and Tammy brought their production and creative expertise to the 2026 Yom HaShoah Commemoration for Jewish Community Council of Victoria, sourcing creative talents to perform, arrange, accompany, compose, rehearse and coordinate the many musical elements that make this event so special.

Today’s stage! the where Adrian, together with Kirsten and Karim, are stage managing the event. Bringing together a collection of performances in one day for the junior awards! Thanks Lyrebirds for having The Chai Collective!

Introducing our Studio Artists, Ellie & Ryan!
www.shtiebel.org.au/liveatshtiebel

🎨 Ellie Malin is a Melbourne-based artist working in painting and printmaking, known for her bold geometries, layered compositions, and explorations of memory, place, and perception. Inspired by life’s patterns and textures, her work moves between soft architectural forms and hints of nature, revealing and concealing layers in a way that invites reflection and curiosity.

For this event, Ellie will exhibit her work and create a collage during the event - tearing, cutting, and layering together to create a communal artwork that celebrates colour, texture, and play.

📖 Ryan Abramowitz is South African-born and St Kilda-based award-winning author, artist, and storyteller whose work explores human nature, grief, love, and healing. Through his business Today Tomorrow Forever, Ryan creates bespoke Ketubot, Chuppahs, and wedding art, celebrating life’s simchas with heartfelt creativity.

At Live @ Shtiebel, Ryan will present his visual artwork and share his debut picture book, Elegy for an Elephant, inspired by his family’s journey of grief and healing. The book has won multiple awards and donates a portion of profits to mental health organisations, offering comfort and connection to readers navigating loss.

Together, Ellie and Ryan transform the space into a place for expression, reflection, and shared creativity — an evening where art becomes both personal and communal.

Important Update about Tonight's Live @ Shtiebel Event

As this week has unfolded, one by one, members of the Chai Collective have fallen ill. By today, we simply found ourselves without the team needed to properly support tonight’s performance.

We are heartbroken to cancel at the last minute, knowing the disappointment this brings to both our artists and those who were planning to be with us. But without the full support and resourcing behind the event, we cannot offer the standard of experience that our performers and audiences deserve.

Whilst we are cancelling tonight’s performance, we are already working with our artists to have them join us at a future Live @ Shtiebel, so you’ll have the chance to experience their art with us in the months ahead.

Thank you for your understanding and kindness.

We’ll be back soon, stronger and healthier, ready to bring art to life again at Shtiebel.
