Catherine Foster surely has to be one of the greatest singers of the big German repertoire in the world. And we are thrilled to be bringing Catherine to Melbourne for one night only at Arts Centre Melbourne's Hamer Hall in #VOElektra.

Here she is talking about the incredible role of Brunhilde, a roll she has championed a number of times.

Next week our friends at Forest Collective present the first recipient of the Michael Stubbs and Malcolm Roberts Opera Prize, Stephen Marsh in #Diapsalmata, a concert of the music of Kym Dillon - Composer.

In Diapsalmata a transgender composer bids a musical farewell to her troubled past state of existence through a heartfelt artistic expression of the abstract mental journey it took to get her out of it.

#VOSelfishGiant returns to Arts Centre Melbourne for a strictly limited season in one month!

Listen up and pay attention to the Giant in this video from the archives of the 2019 production.

After a cantankerous Giant banishes children from playing in his garden, he experiences the chill of perpetual Winter. When children sneakily return, so does the beauty and joyfulness of Spring, teaching the Giant to open his heart generously in order to enjoy life’s riches.

Premiered in 2019, this Green Room Award-winning adaptation comes from the creative genius of two of Victorian Opera’s former Developing Artists: composer Simon Bruckard (Cassandra) and librettist Emma Muir-Smith.

Following its sold-out debut season in 2019, The Selfish Giant returns to the stage with its wit and playfully eclectic musical style.

#VictorianOpera has a long history of providing opportunities for young and developing artists, going back to our very first production in 2006, Benjamin Britten's Noye's Fludde. This year is no exception, where we present two main stage performances that will feature the Victorian Opera Children's Chorus.

The program will bring together young singers aged 10-15 and guide them in the development of their singing and performance skills central to the art form of opera.

Successful applicants will form the chorus of Victorian Opera’s Season 2022 productions, Il Mago di Oz and A Christmas Carol.

6 essential works by Oscar Wilde everyone should read | Victorian Opera

As we get closer to The Selfish Giant returning to Arts Centre Melbourne's Playhouse stage, we are returning to this post on the blog about the iconic Oscar Wilde, the author of the original story, #VOSelfishGiant.

Wilde bestowed many literary gifts upon the world in the form of plays, fiction, poems, essays and even fairy tales. His delightfully witty writing style, along with his flamboyant personality and scandalous private life, made him an unforgettable literary figure. As befits the master of the quip, each Wilde gem is accompanied by a memorable quote.

Widely considered to be the great Australian opera, Voss is both the semi-biographical account of an attempt to conquer the Australian continent and an epic love story.

On the surface Voss is a tale of one man versus nature and his own nature. What lies beneath is an exquisite and moving exploration of the Outsider; a man who desperately seeks an elusive personal connection, and an identity with society. Ultimately it is a love story between two human beings that transcends time and place.

Experience Voss in theatres at Adelaide Festival Centre with State Opera South Australia in May or on screens at home as part of #VictorianOpera's digital access program.

Victorian Opera was saddened to learn of the death of Greig Gailey.

Greig was a valued member of the VO Board from 2008-2014 and helped to nurture the young Company. Greig and his wife, the late Geraldine Lazarus, were very generous supporters of our education programs and those of other Victorian performing arts organisations.

The Victorian Opera family sends our heartfelt condolences to Greig and Geraldine’s family.

Devastated to be missing this "Happy" Kurt Weil gem this weekend. ANY chance it's being filmed / streamed as a one off at a later date? As someone who has seen all his other works ("One Touch Of Venus" was the last rare / tricky production to book- so rarely performed) I'd SO LOVE to "End" my Weill journey seeing this amazing cast of talented folks!

Congratulations VO on a great review for Happy End #vohappyend in Limelight Magazine https://limelightmagazine.com.au/reviews/happy-end-victorian-opera/.
The Happy End opens tonight! Very limited season, closing on Saturday. It’s a brilliant way to get back into the theatre and enjoy this rarely performed gem from Kurt Weill. It’s a good representation of a Weimar ‘Utility Opera’, a bit funny, with a purpose, a heart and a bite. Come for Surabaya Johnny, stay to see what ridiculous quick changes designer @marghorwell has inflicted upon me! Coming up this Sunday 13 March, Elizabeth Barrow - Coloratura Soprano with be joining Lachlan Mackenzie-Spencer on Melbourne in Concert (6-8pm) to perform a gorgeous live to air performance of Handel, Schubert, Gounod and more. In 2018, Elizabeth traveled to Cardiff, Wales, where she completed a Masters in Music Performance at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. She has most recently recorded two CD’s with Dr Robert James Stove (who is accompanying her on Sunday) and performed in Victorian Opera’s productions of ‘Echo & Narcissus’ and ‘The Pearlfishers'. In 2021, The Musical Society of Victoria were unable to hold their annual competition. Many of our live-to-air performances over the coming months will be from the finalists who were unable to compete.

"In 2022, Victorian Opera has presented a visually appealing, sonically stunning version of Tommy that would do The Who proud."
Although Victorian Opera frequently explores beyond the operatic canon, The Who’s Tommy may be its boldest step yet. The show certainly packs a punch and, like the operas of Verdi, Mozart et al., is an important piece of musical heritage whose Australian premiere was overdue, writes Patricia Maunder.
Richard Mills, composer, conductor and current Artistic Director of Victorian Opera has announced that he will not continue in his role at Victorian Opera beyond the end of 2023. Richard has been in the role for 10 years and feels the time has come for him to move on and for the company to seek a new artistic leader. In addition to many milestone productions, collaborations, regional and community projects, Richard has also been responsible for commissioning 21 new Australian works. Congratulations Richard and we wish you well in the next, exciting phase of your career!
