The Age has listed 'The Inheritance' as one of the 10 best shows to see in Victoria in 2024! "If you missed the acclaimed production of 'Angels in America' at fortyfivedownstairs in 2017, this sprawling epic aims to attain the same heights of theatrical bravura. It’s another two-part work spanning seven-plus hours, and like Tony Kushner’s 20th-century classic it’s a popular and critical hit, winning a Tony and Olivier Award for best play. Riffing on E. M. Forster’s Howard’s End, it’s the theatre version of a TV binge, giving you the opportunity to follow a swathe of rich characters across their lives. Plus it’s directed by Kitan Petkovski, one of the most interesting and ambitious theatremakers making a name in Melbourne right now."

Happy new year everyone!

What a busy and wonderful year we've had at the fortyfivedownstairs' gallery in 2023.
We've had 32 exhibitions of artists from Australia around the world, across a wide range of mediums. We've hosted countless opening nights, artist talks, q&as, panel discussions, poetry readings, an embroidery workshop and much more! The year ended on a high with our eight annual emerging artist award 2023. Thank you to everyone involved!

We can't wait to see what 2024 has in store for us!

See you again February 3 when the gallery reopens.

Congratulations to this year's second prize winner of the Emerging Artist Award:

ANGELA MEZZATESTA for her artwork 'STRATA'

Special thanks to our guest judges Heja Jung and Dr. Georgina S. Walker.

Please see below for Angela's artist statement:

"My work 'STRATA' centres around an iterative and evolving process by staining the raw canvas using a fluid medium. By viewing the multiple repetitive lines and tonal gradations, which eventually lead to a deep space of Nothingness/the Void, I hope to captivate the viewer’s attention, guiding them into a state of contemplation or meditation.
“[I]n a work where there is “nothing,” or not much to see, like a …Ad Reinhardt, or Agnes Martin painting…the viewer has to slow down the mind and emotions to apprehend the work. The process is a gradual revelation similar to meditation. The work of art is a mental suspension, not a mental diversion”. (Levy M, 2006) In the process of creating 'STRATA' I have given voice to my materials, “to show how the non-human [can] take part in becomings, such as art, often understood as exclusively [made by] human[s]”. (Konturri KK, 2018)."

Congratulations to this year's first prize winner of the Emerging Artist Award:

MING LIEW for his video artwork 'HOW WILL I REMEMBER?'

Special thanks to our guest judges Heja Jung and Dr. Georgina S. Walker.

Please see below for Ming's artist statement:

"'How Will I Remember?' is an essay film exploring my Chinese-Australian bi-cultural identity in relation to loss, grief and image-making. It's based on my lived experience as a first-generation Chinese immigrant, depicting fragments of my memories as I detach from my ethnic past and embrace my Australian future. It employs a novel methodology that augments moving-image art with auto-ethnography, by utilising diptych moving images, appropriated footage, bilingual voiceover and intertitles, this film renders a fractured narrative that oscillates between fact and fiction, past and present, personal and social. It examines the hidden associations between image-making and identity formation to cultivate new insights into the migrant experience in contemporary Australia. It advocates for social change through artistic language that transcends linguistic, cultural and social barriers."

Join us on Friday 8th December from 5:30pm – 8pm for an evening at fortyfivedownstairs alongside the immersive exhibition “The House That Jack Built”. Building on the themes in the poetic narrative of the exhibition itself, the event will feature poetry, music and dialogue centric to themes of mental health, loneliness and isolation.

The talented DJ Jasmine Speers () will kick off the night from 5:30pm performing a set inspired by the dark and isolated themes of the exhibition itself. I’ll then host from 6:15pm starting with shedding light on my inspiration behind the installation, and am super excited to share some new original pieces written especially for the night.

Singer/songwriter Dan Cully () will be performing a range of originals and covers on themes of isolation and hope, and you’ll hear original spoken word poetry, prose and perspectives from inspirational local writers Neha Kumar (.gallery) and Harjyot Kaur (), with DJ Jasmine also taking the mic to share some original poetry of her own.

To wrap out the evening personal development coach Sam Berry () is joining us to share insights on mental health, and useful tools and resources to identify and deal with our struggles.

FREE entry (optional donation) with limited tickets available (see link: https://events.humanitix.com/beyond-mind-s-shadow). Hugely grateful to the talented artists who’ve come together to help curate this event, and to those coming and showing their support for the themes and artists.

We hope to see you there x
