𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟮𝟯𝟱𝟬𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀.

Every year, the KU and K-State bands play at each other’s stadiums, and every year the sousaphone sections find each other for a photo. This year, both sections lined up to recreate a picture from 1994.

Rewind back to 1994: Dr. Frank Tracz was in his second year as K-State’s director of bands, and his section was marching the first King 2350s the program ever bought. That season, the two sections lined up for a photo that has hung in the K-State band office ever since. Rivals on the scoreboard, friends in the tuba section.

This is where the Legend started. 🪊

In 1894, Henderson N. White built his first trombone with help from Thomas King, a trombonist in Cleveland's Lyceum Theatre Orchestra.

What set it apart was how it was built. The bell, bore, and mouthpipe were all different from the trombones of the day. Players noticed the slide first: finer, smoother, and lighter in action. White cared so much about the slide that he made every King slide by hand himself for the company's first fourteen years.

Most marching baritones are built like small euphoniums. The new King KMB611S and KMB612S are built closer to the horns your players use in concert band.

KMB611S: small shank, .504" bore. A lighter, compact horn that bridges the gap to the mellophones. Jazz trombonists and British-style baritone players will feel at home on it, and it's a good fit for middle school and younger high school bands.

KMB612S: large shank, .551" bore. The do-it-all baritone for lead and section parts, with the large-shank setup drum corps lead players use. Large-bore trombone and euphonium players can bring their usual mouthpiece straight to the field.

King introduced the 2B in the late 1930s, and it went straight to work on the bandstand. Trombonists chose it for its quick response, brilliant projection over a full band, and a vibrant upper register that stays easy to control.

More than ninety years later, it's still the horn that jazz trombonists all over the world - including Gunhild Carling, Lexi Hamner, and Robert Edwards - take to the stage.

Did you know King trombones are named after the player who helped design them?

In 1894, instrument repairman H.N. White teamed up with Thomas King, solo trombonist with the Lyceum Theatre Orchestra. For months, King would head from the theater to White's shop after work to try the horn as it came together.

The result had a new bell, bore, and mouthpipe, and a slide players found finer, smoother, and lighter than anything else. It carried his name. 👑

Nothing engraved yet, but the curved bell brace gives it away. Since the 1910's, this iconic design has signified a professional King trombone.

But aesthetics aren't everything. Jazz, Latin, and pop artists reach for King trombones quick response, crisp articulation, and a bright sound that cuts through a full horn section.
