Wynton Marsalis

Wynton Marsalis Internationally acclaimed musician, composer, educator and a leading advocate of American culture.

Wynton Marsalis is an internationally acclaimed musician, composer and bandleader, an educator and a leading advocate of American culture. He has created and performed an expansive range of music from quartets to big bands, chamber music ensembles to symphony orchestras and tap dance to ballet, expanding the vocabulary for jazz and classical music with a vital body of work that places him among th

e world’s finest musicians and composers. Always swinging, Marsalis blows his trumpet with a clear tone, a depth of emotion and a unique, virtuosic style derived from an encyclopedic range of trumpet techniques. When you hear Marsalis play, you’re hearing life being played out through music. Marsalis’ core beliefs and foundation for living are based on the principals of jazz. He promotes individual creativity (improvisation), collective cooperation (swing), gratitude and good manners (sophistication), and faces adversity with persistent optimism (the blues). With his evolved humanity and through his selfless work, Marsalis has elevated the quality of human engagement for individuals, social networks and cultural institutions throughout the world.

“The Wonderful Word of Louis Armstrong," the latest record from Wynton Marsalis, is out this Friday, April 24!

A century ago, Louis Armstrong changed the course of American music with his seminal Hot Five and Hot Seven recording sessions. Now, Wynton Marsalis breathes new life into this celebrated music alongside renowned multi-instrumentalist Vince Giordano and world-class members of both their bands. By assembling an all-star band that blurs generational and stylistic lines, this new album is the embodiment of Armstrong's belief in human equality and our shared responsibility to one another, and a demonstration of why the master musician is just as relevant as ever.

Last night, March 27, we closed our Japan and Korea tour with a sold-out concert at Pyeongtaek Art Center in Pyeongtaek.
The hall was full, and it was a pleasure to see so many young and enthusiastic fans there.

We enjoyed our time in Korea very much and are grateful for the welcome we received. Here are a few moments from the final concert of the tour.

“Let Freedom Swing” is out today! Originally recorded live in 2004, this album from the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis celebrates the charismatic leaders who gave voice to the struggle with new, sprawling musical commissions that foreground their oratory.

"Let Freedom Swing" features modern icons—Rev. Calvin O. Butts III, Patricia Clarkson, Glenn Close, Keith David, Mario Van Peebles, Alfre Woodard, and more—reading speeches and works by Václav Havel, Lyndon Johnson, Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Desmond Tutu. Their words, underscored by the JLCO's sublime playing, are particularly relevant today and encourage listeners to stand up for unity and civil liberties during this crucial moment in our nation’s history.
