Florida CraftArt

Florida CraftArt Fine craft contemporary ceramics, fiber, glass, jewelry, metal, mixed media, wood by Florida Artists. Petersburg’s artistic renaissance.

As the only statewide nonprofit representing Florida’s fine craft artists, Florida CraftArt is a member-supported organization that helps mentor and advance artists. Headquartered at 5th Street and Central Avenue, this vibrant organization has been at the center of St. Gallery visitors delight in original, handmade fine craft — ceramics, fiber, glass, jewelry, sculpture, and wood — created by more

than 250 of Florida’s finest craft artists. Every artist is vetted to ensure that the art is of the highest quality. During the year, there are seven curated shows in the Exhibition Gallery featuring local, regional, and national artists. Admission is always free to the galleries. Educational programming includes walking and bike mural tours, artist’s talks, lectures, hands-on activities, and workshops for adults and children. On the weekend before Thanksgiving, the annual CraftArt Festival welcomes more than 10,000 people to a free outdoor art show featuring 100 outstanding fine craft artists from around the country. The two-day festival held in downtown St. Petersburg is an ideal time for holiday gift shopping. Sponsored Emerging Artists are mentored and given the opportunity to launch and expand their careers. Founded in 1951, Florida CraftArt’s primary goal is the success of the fine craft artists of Florida, helping them develop into profitable professional artists. The gallery staff and board of directors are invested in mentoring artists in product development, marketing, pricing, and business practices. Florida CraftArt has a Permanent Collection of Fine Craft and other exhibitions that travel to art museums and organizations. On the second floor of Florida CraftArt’s 100-year-old building are ArtLofts, 20 artists’ studios. ArtLofts are open by appointment or by chance and on second Saturday ArtWalk.

Have you seen REBELS artist Ellen Simon’s artwork yet?! Ellen Simon has been quilting since the mid-70s. Her first love is fabricating art quilts, she enjoys working in series, experimenting with surface design techniques and different materials. This is evident in Simon’s Hirshhorn Museum II. She states, “Collecting materials for Hirschhorn was a fun challenge. You look at everyday trash in a new way.”

Make sure to also check out her other artworks in REBELS called Natural Openings and Split Image.

Have you seen our Best of Show winner for REBELS? “No Cage Will Hold Me!” by the lovely Joyce Kenfield Curvin.

In Curvin’s own words, “Lately, it seems "freedom" is becoming more of a political buzzword than a true tenet of our lives. There are attempts to encase us in rules that whitewash our world and subdue the colors that make us who we are. Fortunately, nothing can truly cage the creative spirit. Note that the bird is excited! A creative spirit will always find liberation in speaking out with hope, resilience, and the determination to create a better future.” Joyce creates papier mâché and mixed media animal sculptures inspired from her nature and craft filled childhood.

REBELS is on display until August 26th

The "REBELS" exhibition at Florida CraftArt showcases the perspectives of 27 artists and their interpretation of what it means to be a rebel in the art world. It features artwork worth close to $100,000, and it was judged by Brenda McMahon of the Brenda McMahon Gallery in Gulfport, Florida.
Joyce Curvin of Palm Harbor won Best of Show for her piece titled "No Cage Will Hold Me!" which depicts a bird breaking out of its cage with defiant quotes adorning it.
Donna Slawsky of St. Petersburg was awarded First Place for her work "Say Their Names," a mosaic created from stained glass and found objects with the names of Black persons killed inscribed on a repurposed cabinet door.
James Bennett of Lutz received Second Place for his thought-provoking mixed-media wall sculpture titled "The Double Arrow of Time.”
Third Place was awarded to Shelly Steck Reale of St. Petersburg for her poignant and amusing mixed-media ceramic sculpture, digital art, and wood piece called "Superheroes of A Certain Age (Hot Flash)."
Additionally, Honorable Mentions were given to Dave Flach, Mikhail Gubin, Samuel Hammer, Candace Knapp, and Elizabeth Neily. Inverness-based artist Suzy Pease received the Director's Award for her ceramic and gold sculpture titled "Antebellum," featuring an octopus and a shell.

Chris Chomick and Peter Meder's work, "Dr. Mesmer the Electronic Automaton", is on display for the Alchemy of Art exhibit and was given an Honorable Mention award! See Chomick and Meder's piece and the rest of the exhibit while it's on display until June 24th.

"Our design process starts with an attitude. We find inspiration in strange and unusual imagery; beautiful, but disturbing, intriguing yet provoke feelings of uneasiness. Interesting faces encountered on our travels, outrageous hairstyles, centuries old religious icons and ornately embellished wax effigies; these are the creative seeds for many of our figures. When we come across an interesting item, we wonder, "Who would wear such a thing?" and design a character that would.

When creating our artwork we often incorporate new and unconventional materials and methods, for example 3D sculpting and printing our figures; using thermoplastic to shape the body form and to house the automaton internal mechanism; and utilizing available technologies to program a servo-controlled automaton."

Bobbi Baugh's works, "Magic Socks", "Neither Up Nor Down", "Saying the Magic Words", "Morning in the Burned House", and "Secret Garden" are on display for the Alchemy of Art exhibit. "Saying the Magic Words" was given the Director's Award! See Bobbi's work and the rest of the exhibit while they're on display until June 24th!

"I make storytelling the heart of my quilts. Because stories are magic. Given a glimpse, a story fragment, the viewer longs to enter the scene and know more. And then viewers insert their own experiences and emotions into the story. The power of the story happens when it is told and then received.

Where is the child, only partially visible? In an in-between place: "Neither Up Nor Down.”

Two little girls escape their boring dull-colored lives to ride through an ethereal sky, powered by “Magic Socks.”

A lone child turns away from the neighborhood to enter her own world, creating her own space by “Saying the Magic Words.”

Common kitchen elements are there, but not there, existing in a memory world. "Morning in the Burned House.” (based on Margaret Atwood poem of the same name.)

Memories, dreams and the lush shadows of a hidden place overlap in a "Secret Garden.”(inspired by my visit to a secret walled garden off an alley in downtown Natchez, MS)"

This father-son math-art team's work includes over 300 curved origami sculptures, including pieces in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, and the Renwick Gallery in the Smithsonian. Their scientific work includes over 100 published joint papers, including several about combining mathematics and art. They won a Guggenheim Fellowship (2013) for exploring folding of other materials, such as hot glass.

These sculptures explore the power of folding paper along curved creases using a form first studied by Josef Albers at the Bauhaus in the late 1920s. The circular creases cause the paper to fold itself into a natural equilibrium form, a process not yet understood mathematically. Combining multiple pieces of paper results in even more complicated mathematical forms.

AWARDS PRESENTED! The Art of Alchemy is a juried exhibition of 75 original artworks by 31 artists from California, Florida, Massachusetts, and New York. The exhibition is co-curated by Elizabeth Brincklow and Mary Childs bringing their strong backgrounds, experiences, and reputations as art leaders and visionaries to the show.
The exhibition was judged by Christine Renc Carter, the Executive Director of the Leepa Rattner Museum in Tarpon Springs, Florida. She says, “It was a thrill to spend time judging the exhibition. Many artists explored science, math, and technology through the various mediums of fine craft.”

Best of Show was awarded to James Allen and Eric Hilton for a glass sculpture “Tides of Time.” Eric sculpted a glass panel with flowing forms and graceful curves that invite the viewer's gaze on a journey through the abstract landscape of the glass and the ever-changing imagery within. Behind the glass is a computer monitor on which James has created a dynamic panorama of moving images that wind through and around and insinuate themselves into the landscape of the glass. Like the seasons and the tides, these images never repeat themselves exactly, but are constantly generated anew by custom software James developed explicitly for this piece.

First Place went to Natalie Tyler for a glass sculpture titled “Eagle’s Nest.” She says, “I am inspired by the cycles of life within nature, the birth, life, death, and regeneration. Using glass and bronze, I capture ephemeral moments in time, and preserve the story for our future.”

Nick Reale received Second Place for a dynamic wooden chair titled “The Float.” He was inspired by a “tension table” that he saw and designed a leg-free chair that is both scientific and magical.

Third Place was awarded to Erik and Martin Demaine for “Fire Curls,” an intricate sculpture folded from watercolor paper. Erik Demaine and Martin Demaine are a father-son math-art team. Martin started the first private hot-glass studio in Canada and has been called the father of Canadian glass. Since 2005, Martin Demaine has been an Artist-in-Residence at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Erik is also at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as a professor in computer science. He received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2003. In these capacities, Erik and Martin work together in paper, glass, and other materials. They use their exploration in sculpture to help visualize and understand unsolved problems in science, and their scientific abilities to inspire new art forms.

Honorable mentions were given to Chomick and Meder, Melissa Fair, Leeann Kroetsch, P.A. Kushner, and Wayne Strattman.

The Director’s Award for an art quilt titled “Saying the Magic Words” was given to Bobbi Baugh who said, “I make storytelling the heart of my quilts because stories are magic. Given a glimpse, a story fragment, the viewer longs to enter the scene and know more. And then viewers insert their own experiences and emotions into the story.”
The exhibition was made possible with sponsorship from Kathryn Howd and Edward Rucks, Jones & Dunn Legacy Group Premier Sotheby’s International Realty, and Duncan McClellan Gallery. The show runs through June 24. Admission is free.
