Call to Artists: Ratical, Too!
When: April 2025
Where: ArtLofts, 10 5th Street North, St. Petersburg
Cost: Free; we ask artists to consider donating 20% of art sales to Florida Rat Rescuers, a 501C3 that supports pet rodent rescue

Calling all rat lovers! We are working to replicate our successful 2023 art show, Ratical, with a new exhibit in 2025 – Ratical, Too! This is a miniature pop up show for one month in the narthex of the ArtLofts gallery – a perfect and cozy spot for ratties and humans alike!

All mediums are accepted. Rats should only be depicted in a positive light (we’re also working to rid any negative stigmas for these beloved pets. Think of them like really tiny pups).

The show is free to enter and sales are direct to artists. Items that are sold may be taken directly from the show at the time of sale. Any art that is sold out of the area needs to be picked up and shipped by the artist to the purchaser. (Last time, we did have several items that were sold to people in various parts of the state. Artists charged a shipping fee and mailed the artwork directly). We do ask that artists donate 20% (or more if so moved) of sales to the Florida Rat Rescuers Network, a 501C3 in the state of Florida that helps to rehome, seek veterinary care, and educate for pet rats.

To submit: Please send an email with images or ideas to [email protected]. Art needs to be dropped off the last week of March for hanging. The show will be up on April 1, in time to celebrate the National Day of Rats (yes, it’s a holiday) on April 4. There is a planned live online event for that afternoon for people outside of the area. The show comes down April 30 for artists to pick up any unsold works.

This is from Dunedin fine Arts center. Honest to god, I read this over the break, because I teach a live online world religion Saturday mornings. Even more fun than that it's an Express 8 week 9 to 12:00 a.m. class from home. I give the students a break and I was doing a quick check of email and saw this and I had to pull myself together to finish teaching. Y'all have no idea how down I have felt about the Arts lately. This was such a boost that I'm starting to tear up again just posting on it.

This is a show I've been looking forward to seeing but of course the hurricanes hit. This was the one that took me an hour and a half for drop off on a day that should normally be 30 minutes to 45 minutes to get there. No one told me when the reception have been rescheduled and this is literally the first email I've seen on it, and it came today. If anybody is in the area and can get some photos I'd greatly appreciate it! I have a sold out trolley tour that was scheduled at the beginning of the month and I can't go. Well folks, how many of you have been trying to claim 2024 is a better year and have been disappointed by this unending month of january? You're not alone. So some folks are calling for a new start to 2024 and we are here to help. We are going to turn February into the new October (Winter edition). If you all haven't had enough of our wonderful holiday, as we now have not one, not two, not three, but four events, then you are our kind of people!

Feb. 10: Valentwe'en 2024: Tell-Tale Heart opens during Art walk, 5-9 pm. We will have belly dancing performances at 6:45 and 7:30 in Brian James's studio, a spirit reader and B. Stark art studio, one artist will dress in costume to tell the story of her art in the kitchen gallery, we will have a modern St Petersburg-based Edgar Allan Poe greeting in the front gallery and reminding folks to vote for their favorite piece, and the spirits of St Petersburg will have a station in the Creative Lofts conference room next gallery space to talk about our ghost tours, paranormal investigations, answer questions, gather stories, and let you know about our upcoming events! We might even see if we can find a couple of our local spiritual denizens who reside in the building. There is a free drawing for prizes as well! And to top all of that off, artists from all over the Tampa Bay area are presenting their interpretations of Edgar Allan Poe's Gothic stories. 100% of art sales go direct to artists to help support local!

Feb. 17, Valentween comes to Smokin' 19! This was a former motor Lodge, establishment of interesting repute and now a billiards room / bar / barbecue spot. Artists have permission to show art and 100% of sales go directly to the artists. We hope to have an event here too for the Saturday opening. More to be determined.

February 24, we are doing a Valentwe'en Full Moon Ghost Tour in haunted historic Roser Park. There are four tours scheduled between 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. and the cost is $20 per person. The event can be accessed via our events page and Eventbrite for tickets.

February 27th we will be doing a presentation for Nerd Nite at Bayboro Brewing. Keeping with our theme, we're going to continue to spread the joy of our holiday and talk about its origins, we are going to show you some of our delightful evidence from our recent paranormal investigations, including Roser Park, and we will do a paranormal q&A answering questions about phenomenon, perhaps reviewing evidence or listening to stories, and sharing any advice that we have! Tickets are for sale, doors open at 6:30 and the event starts at 7:00. More info: http://nerdnite.com. There will be three presentations each 15-20 minutes plus 5 minute question-and answer sessions. More information and be found at http://nerdnite.com, or [email protected] .
