West Virginia, the way it was and always should be. The towns, the cities, the mountains, the people,

West Virginia was formed when the western counties of Virginia freed themselves from the tyrannical "confederate" counties in eastern Virginia. The new state was admitted to the Union and signed into statehood by President Abraham Lincoln on June 20, 1863. We've had a colorful history ever since.

*West Virginia has the distinction of being the only state to form by seceding from a confederate state.

October 17 is a pretty special date in Pirates history.

Twice on this date, the Bucs went into Game 7 of the World Series against the Baltimore Orioles — and twice they came home champions.

1971: Roberto Clemente homers, Steve Blass goes the distance, Pirates win it all.

1979: Willie Stargell goes deep and the “We Are Family” Pirates finish the job, 4–1.

Same date. Same opponent. Eight years apart. Two championships.
