We have many animals at The Islands and in the Aquarium that are native to beaches. But for National Beach Day, we're highlighting an animal you normally would not associate with the shoreline. Humboldt penguins are actually beach-dwelling birds. They don’t fly but they are excellent swimmers!

Humboldt penguins are native to the shores of Peru and Chile in South America. They like the nearby rocky seaside cliffs and come down to the beaches, sometimes needing to waddle through sunbathing sea lions, to get to the ocean for a swim. Enjoy these photos of our Humboldt penguins on the “beach” of their habitat in Kids Kingdom.

As the month winds down, we’re marking "August is for Antelope Month!"

Did you know our nyalas welcomed a calf earlier this summer? This antelope species is native to southeastern Africa. Dad Prince, mom Paprika, and baby Pepper are all now exploring the habitat at African Savanna together. As Pepper grows, his coat will darken and become shaggy from his chin to his stomach and along his back. Eventually, this little one will sport antlers just like his dad!

By supporting the Zoo’s Annual Fund, you’re offering hope for the future of wildlife - just like baby Pepper. Every donation, big or small, helps us to continue our vital conservation work that makes a difference to animals around the world. Here’s how to donate: https://ow.ly/hVqP50ZGfPM

As we approach fall, you may be thinking about your end-of-year giving and your taxes - and the impact your dollars can make.

Through Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program, you have a powerful opportunity to redirect your state tax dollars toward something meaningful with a dollar-for-dollar reduction in your PA tax liability. By supporting the Zoo through EITC, you can receive a 90% PA state tax credit, significantly lowering what you owe in state taxes. For business owners, there may be additional tax advantages.

Your support brings vital programs to life by funding conservation-focused education, community outreach that connects Zoo animals and educators with local neighborhoods, and scholarships that ensure more children can access Zoo programs.

To learn more or explore whether EITC giving is right for you, contact [email protected] or 412-365-2547. Click here: https://ow.ly/FFUv50ZFHsA

From meeting amazing animals and exploring habitats to discovering the importance of conservation and caring for wildlife, it has been a joy this summer watching our Zoo Campers learn, grow, and develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world. Their curiosity, excitement, and compassion made this summer truly special.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to PNC for proudly supporting our Campership program. The scholarships provided by the program make Zoo Camp more accessible to campers who otherwise could not afford to attend.

We are grateful to have shared amazing adventures with our campers and hope the memories and lessons from Zoo Camp stay with the children for years to come. We look forward to seeing everyone again next summer!
