Goddesses and Monsters is a collection of ceramics and paintings that are, in their own ways, self-portraits. They may look very different, but both come from the same place: the complicated collection of things that make up a person.
My monsters are playful, colourful and always a little strange. They have their own personalities, quirks and ridiculous idiosyncrasies. Some are based on parts of myself that I have learned to live with, while others come from experiences, relationships and the some of the strange things that have made me who I am today.
The women in the paintings are darker and more mysterious. They are not portraits of specific people so much as explorations of different parts of myself: strength, vulnerability, uncertainty, boredom, beauty and everything in between. I’m interested in the idea that a woman can be both goddess and monster within the same body and the same lifetime.
We are rarely just one thing. We can be beautiful and difficult, generous and selfish, confident and afraid. We carry the things that have hurt us alongside the things that make us powerful. The parts of ourselves that we might consider monstrous can often be the very things that help us survive.
These pieces are my way of celebrating it all—the goddesses, the monsters, the beautiful bits and the messy ones. I hope you will love them as much as I have learned to.
