These paintings show the evolution of form and composition throughout Lewis' career. The first winter sleigh scene (brown covered bridge) was painted likely in the 1950s; the second (red bridge) dates from the 1960s.

In the earlier painting, Lewis covers more of the surface with landscape detail - notice the green paint filled in around the tree branches - and adheres to perspectival accuracy. Notice the foreshortened horse and sleigh and sense of the landscape receding into the distance with each element appearing to be the correct 'size' as it recedes.

By the height of her career in the early to mid 1960s, Lewis explores flattened forms (compare the shape of the sleigh!) and compresses the space. In this scene, the background features, like the two other sleighs, appear 'too large' and don't obey the rules of perspective.

This type of expression and rejection of formality is in line with experimentation happening elsewhere in Europe and North America throughout the twentieth century. This is one of the reasons why Lewis' work is compelling for both collectors and art historians. 😊

Hi everyone. Sarah here. Our business is honoured to be nominated for this award from the The Saint John Region Chamber alongside JavaMoose Coffee Roaster and Cedarcrest Gardens.

When Caleb and I were teenagers, we (along with an excellent crew of volunteers) helped organize an all-ages coffeehouse at the Saint John Arts Centre. Glen and Randy at JavaMoose Coffee Roaster loaned us a giant coffee machine and gave us armloads of coffee and also (I'm pretty sure) a stack of filters. They didn't know us - we were just some kids with an art project. And then a whole bunch of young artists and musicians drank (a whooooole bunch of) Java Moose coffee at the SJAC on Friday nights c. 2004-2007 (see videos over on Saint John Tapes!).

Caleb and I are still doing art projects, in large part due to encouraging nudges, generous support, and guidance from other entrepreneurs and small businesses.

JavaMoose Coffee Roaster you're a champ. Thanks for that encouraging nudge 22 years ago.

Three outstanding businesses. One exciting night of celebration!

Congratulations to our 2026 Business of the Year Award finalists:
