Catharine McAvity (1915-1999) was a significant and prolific artist who lived and worked in Rothesay, New Brunswick. In her formative years, she studied at Mount Allison University and independently with several prominent artists including Jack Humphrey and Miller Brittain. Her work has been exhibited widely and is held in numerous public collections, including The Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Fredericton, NB; The Confederation Centre for the Arts, Charlottetown, PEI; The New Brunswick Museum, Saint John, NB; the Owens Art Gallery, Sackville, NB; and the Canada Council Art Bank. In 2010-11, a major retrospective of her work was organized by the New Brunswick Museum in Saint John, NB.

McAvity’s work exists as a parallel document to the traditional Canadian landscape canon, situated in a particular lineage starting with David Milne (1882-1953) and developed alongside K.M. Graham (1913-2008). These three artists share a lightness of approach while utilizing colour and form to negotiate landscape in an abstract manner.

Arthur Villeneuve was a Québécois painter and member of the Order of Canada. He worked as a barber in Chicoutimi, and in 1946 had a religious revelation urging him to make use of his artistic capabilities. His most famous work is the house he completely covered, inside and out, with his paintings. Since 1993, his painted house has been regarded as a national heritage asset by the Canadian government.
