FIELD TRIPS 🚌

Looking to catch some incredible summer theatre outside of the city?

Maybe make a few fun stops en route? Well, what better way to do all that than with a good old fashioned Field Trip! Let us do the driving in a comfortable passenger bus with wifi and air conditioning. We'll make some stops along the way so you can enjoy some scenery and snacks, art and shopping, and of course -- a meal! All of this will culminate in the main event: a performance at one of Nova Scotia's incredible rural professional theatre companies.

Before or after the shows we'll have an exclusive chat with some of the artists involved before we make one last stop at the market for an ice cream or a snack on the way home.

Tonight is your only chance to catch EPIDERMIS CIRCUS at STAGES✌

This beautifully twisted variety show is performed by Ingrid Hansen, who also puppeteers for the Jim Henson Company’s Fraggle Rock and for Sesame Workshop. Watch behind-the-scenes as SNAFU creates a live puppet film, animating cheeky vignettes in the palm of her hand and projecting them onto a huge screen.

An “enormously entertaining, one-hour madcap vaudeville show. It is chock full of riotous, naughty, and mystifying vignettes using her bare hands, her face, her mouth, tiny toys, and a doll’s head. Hansen's hands-in-motion have the kind of presence that is often attributed to the greatest stage performers, and their movement, combined with her skill for vocalization, establishes colorful characters playing out their scenarios -- transfixing the audience, and creating pin-drop silence interspersed with spontaneous bursts of laughter.” - Culture Catch NYC

INTERVIEW: Kat McCormack on What's Coming Up at Alderney Landing for EFT's Stages Fest

“I’m invested in the audience experience,” says McCormack about the festival as a whole, “and what kind of a leap [folks] are making as artists to tell a story in a new way. I’m really leaning into non-traditional work, and work that’s gently participatory, and work that is playful or challenging in some way- leaning beyond a traditional theatre piece. I’m really excited by things that are high tech or handmade, but lean into another genre. With Shortcuts, Manual, and Epidermis Circus, you are literally in most cases seeing the handmade happen right in front of you, but through a lens of a larger scale. Then 2021 is so exceptionally experimental, and the story is so interesting; it’s deeply personal through this kind of larger than life scale that brings you into it. I’m really curious about seeing work that is affected by the audience… [where] truly the experience is different every night based on the people of our community who were here and how they’re reacting to it… I’ve been really proud of the programming… and this year especially feels really soft… we all need something a little soft. These shows are caring for you, and also asking the questions of how do we care for ourselves and for people we love, even when we deeply disagree with them.”

"Explaining Mass for Shut-Outs Davis says, 'I grew up Catholic, and I’m not anymore, and I realized that I kind of liked the framework of Catholic Mass, because it’s kind of theatrical, and there were some things about it that moved me, even as the content really bothered me. So, Mass For Shut-Outs is sort of my take on a communal experience that brings people together, that critiques the Catholic Church a little bit, and also asks questions about why we are drawn to religion in the first place. What about it is interesting? What about it is problematic? So, there’s a few things that are direct plays on what happens at Catholic Mass, and the rest of it is a lot of commentary, poetry, music, and [is] very loosely based on the framework of that kind of service.'"
