DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. COMMEMORATION
PLAY: THE DREAM CONTINUES Micmac Friendship Ctr. Feb. 1987
CAYG production featuring David Woods as Dr. King, Rosella Fraser as Coretta Scott King, Darlene Evans as Rosa Parks, Alastair Duncan as US president John F. Kennedy, Jeremiah Sparks as Rev. King Sr. Musical guests Sonlight Chospel Chorus of North Preston. Written and directed by David Woods.

In 1987 David Woods's play The Dream Continues on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was the talk of northend Halifax. Over 300 people crammed into the Micmac Friendship Centre on Gottingen Street to see this amazing production that starred many up and coming young actors and performers. The play left an indelible mark and even today its title is used to mark the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr commemoration presented by the Nova Scotia Mass Choir. It was also the first of Woods's plays to be performed nationally when Black Theatre West, presented the play in Vancouver (1988) and then toured that production in BC and Alberta a year later.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) Commemoration

Slain American Civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King jr. had a huge impact on African Nova Scotians. In the 1980’s David Woods and the Cultural Awareness Youth Group of Nova Scotia (CAYG) initiated an annual public commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday life and achievements with a number of activities including annual programs at the Halifax North Branch Library, a Dartmouth Natal Day Float and two of Woods's plays The Dream Continues and Dream of A Child.

REST IN PEACE STAN CHRISTIE
Received sad news today that former Cole Harbour High School drama teacher and well known Nova Scotia Department of Education drama curriculum developer, Stan Christie passed recently. In 1981(?) he worked with students at Cole Harbour High School to develop an original drama "Freedom' which told the story of the Black Loyalist settlement of Preston (and the rest of Nova Scotia) both as free and enslaved persons. This remarkable play won Best Drama Award at the 1981 Nova Scotia High School Drama Festival and a national multiculturalism award and was broadcast nationally on CBC TV. The play was an inspiration to me as a young writer to begin writing plays about local Black history. it was also the main inspiration for me founding Voices Black Theatre Ensemble. Performers in 'Freedom' included Shelley Hamilton, Vetty Fraser (Thomas), Shelly Provo, Eddie Simmonds, Paula Simmonds, Sherry Willis.

What is the Definition of Black community used by The Competition?
For the sake of this competition, an African Nova community is defined as a current or former geographic location in Nova Scotia where Blacks resided or currently reside over an extended period of time and where a physical institution created to serve that community was built (church, community hall, school, social/political building, business centre)

The municipality or county that contains specific community or communities e.g. Preston
Other examples:
Individual communities Lincolnville, Manchester, Mulgrave, Sunnyville or municipality/county- Guysborough.
If a team selects a community not included in competition’s approved list of Black Communities, entrants must provide clear and verifiable proof of their selected community’s existence prior to submitting application. Contact [email protected].

-Openly plagiarized material, quotes not credited to its creator
-Inaccurate, disputed, unverifiable information
-Photos, art should be accompanied by sources and/or permissions from creators
