I wanted to share what went down and how I got the perfect photo on The Great Wall of China.
When I started planning my China trip I knew I wanted a pic on The Great Wall of China. Around the same time from Rupaul's Drag Race shared on her Instagram how they were blocked and refused to take photos in full drag on the Great Wall. My heart sank but I thought I'm still going to try.
I emailed the customer service at the Great Wall and explained what I wanted to do and if it would be allowed. I also expressed my concerns and that I don't want to offend their culture. Within a day I got a reply saying it is totally fine and they would "love to welcome me" as long as my outfit is respectful and not religious or political.
Finally the day arrived! The plan was to get up at 4AM to get in drag, leave the hotel at 6AM so I could arrive at the Great Wall when they open at 7:30AM so I could have the Wall to myself to get the perfect photo... It worked!
Nervously,I was met by security with confused but friendly faces, scanned my passport and got on the chairlift to ascend the Great Wall of China! For those who know, getting off a chairlift is never graceful and a floor length gown does not help. I was laughing so much and the lift operators was laughing even harder. Not at me, but with me! Everyone was so lovely.
I climbed a few stairs and stepped onto the Great Wall of China for the first time in my life, in full drag! It was such a surreal experience and one I will remember for the rest of my life.
After a few photos it started to get busy and I got out of drag. I was wearing shorts and a Tshirt underneath the dress. I wiped my face and stuffed Betty in my backpack and hiked the rest of the wall.
Afterwards I sent them another email just to say thank you and included a few photos. They responded with the sweetest email, thanking me and even told me I looked fabulous.
I'm not saying my experience will be or is everyone's experience. All I'm saying is everything is not always as it seems. China is a conservative country in many ways but it doesn't mean that acceptance doesn't exist. The world is changing, slowly but surely.
