OK. These are unusual. They are two 9x12 studio oil on panel paintings from photos around Kanab, Utah. Kanab is the main town approaching Maynard Dixon country from Arizona. Both are painted with the same limited palette I've been using AND with a single 24-inch brush held at the far end, i.e., forced looseness. I'm not sure how good they are, but they ARE loose. And the color is spot on (believe it or not). I call them "Kanab Sand & Sage" (at the entrance to Peekaboo Canyon) and "East of Kanab" (the Mars-scape).

So I was in southwest Utah 2 weeks back. I did 9 paintings, but before I start posting those, I wanted to show you two from an earlier trip. This is a set of two from the eastern approach to Zion National Park--in limited Zorn palette for that Renaissance "old masters" look. I love the rim lighting from these backlit scenes, which is the story, plus the weird shapes, typical of Zion. I just put these up for sale on my website, davidrmarsh.com. , , ,

Forgot to post my paintings from British Columbia two weeks ago. Here they are, all 9x12, all outdoors, and all in a limited palette (white, black, greyish yellow and red). No blue! It was a family reunion, so two are going to hosting cousins. Enjoy!

Getting ready for 5 days in British Columbia. I'm practicing with water-based oils since I can't fly with "turpentine." My limited selection lacks an ultramarine blue workhorse, so these look a bit "off" (too warm). BUT they're painted by knife, thus lively, loose, and off. Both are the Arizona Snow Bowl: from a distance and in it.

Open Studio 2026 is now in the books. Here I am (in John Deere hat) welcoming the public. It's so easy for an artist to seek "the zone" -- solitary, meditative--that it's good to actually TALK to people. I had 141 amazing visitors who purchased $3500 worth of art. Win-win-win. Thank you, everyone! Earlier posts show short walk-through videos of the paintings in the show. More paintings are on my website: davidrmarsh.com. Onward!

It's the annual OPEN STUDIO 2026: Saturday and Sunday, 10-5 (90 Shotgun Drive, Sedona, AZ). In case you can't teleport yourself, here are 4 short video walk-throughs. If you see something you like, give me a jingle (413) 992-8480. Here are #1 and #2.

Spent last week with an elderly missionary in Grand Junction, Colorado. He lives right up against the Colorado National Monument (gorgeous). The 9x12 plein air oil painting is in his backyard looking in the other direction as the sun just kisses the rock layers and trees.

I also include 3 photos up in the Monument.

Yesterday I sent out my quarterly newsletter with image of 15 paintings. Request it from my website (davidrmarsh.com) and sign up for more.

"Evening Glow at Lost Dutchman State Park" started out as a 12"x16" demo on a sheet of canvas. It's a "keeper," though: atmospheric and cozy warm. Once it's dry, I'll glue it to Gatorboard, frame it and offer it for sale. The park is in the Superstition Mountains east of Phoenix. Check out my website: .

This is from a photo I took on Wednesday, walking back from Basha's grocery store. "Up Coffee Pot Drive" (16x12 oil on linen panel) featuring Thunder Mountain is a morning study in shadows, far, near, core and cast.
