"Light on Blue Mesa" (8x10 oil) is my second Route 66 Centennial painting. Blue Mesa is one of the most popular sights in the Petrified Forest/Painted Desert National Park. Fun how the light rakes across the small knoll and its grasses.

We are 20 days from the "Route 66 Centennial Art Show" in Cottonwood, AZ. In honor of the show, I'll be posting a series of 10 of my framed "Mother Road" paintings. First is "BNSF Meets the Painted Desert" (11x14). "BNSF" = Burlington Northern Santa Fe RR, 100 cars of which cross the state every 15 minutes. You can see the train near the horizon.

I'm trying gouache for fun. It's like an opaque water color. Controlling dilution is my early challenge. "Aspen Grove" is about 6x9.

Believe it or not this is a view in uptown Sedona, AZ! Who knew that nuclear subs docked up there! I was trying to paint like Maynard Dixon: big bold cloud shape with only a few other shapes. I sold it. I'm going to try a bigger one.

Big story behind this, which I'll spare you. It's taken from a photo on I-40 eastbound from Kingman, AZ just before sunup. Challenges were (1) the color of the three layers of clouds, (2) sky color gradation, and (3) bounced light on the horizon peaks.

I just mounted, varnished and framed these Massachusetts paintings. All are 9x12 oil: "Summer Sky" (Hadley), Woods Cove (Orleans), and "Swift River Relic" (Bondsville). Wouldn't they make a great set! Christmas is coming! :)

"Bondsville Lower Falls" (9x12 oil) is an outdoor knife painting from a hidden vantage point on an adjacent sluiceway. The Swift River is halfway between Amherst MA and the Mass Pike. I aimed for the illusion of relentless motion with knife-fulls of titanium white plus dots of yellow ochre and cadmium yellow dragged over the edge, down the falls, and then downstream. Another outdoor knife painting. "Still Standing" features an ancient, huge, and scarred oak guarding entry to the dark forest behind and up the hill. This started as a brush painting. Little by little the knife took over, dominated and claimed the surface. Looking closely reveals a clump of leaves that has just turned. Fall is coming. The scene is at Cranberry Pond in Sunderland, MA, one of 75 painting destinations for the Amherst Plein Air Society. Back to Arizona next week. ; ; , ,
