Another outdoor knife painting. "Still Standing" features an ancient, huge, and scarred oak guarding entry to the dark forest behind and up the hill. This started as a brush painting. Little by little the knife took over, dominated and claimed the surface. Looking closely reveals a clump of leaves that has just turned. Fall is coming. The scene is at Cranberry Pond in Sunderland, MA, one of 75 painting destinations for the Amherst Plein Air Society. Back to Arizona next week. ; ; , ,

Call this "Opposite Day." The first is a knife painting of Poor Farm Swamp, featuring morning light from top right to bottom left with a dominating deep woods shadow at 10 o'clock. It has about 5 times the amount of paint I typically use. The second is an iconic down river view from Coolidge Bridge linking Hadley and Northampton, MA. The pay of geometric vs. organic shapes and lines is "the story." This high key painting has thin paint with canvas showing through here and there. For more, check out . , , , , , ,

"Swift River Relic" features an old granite retaining wall along the west bank of the river about 5 miles below the Quabbin Reservoir (Boston's water supply). It was a serene spot till a deluge arrived an hour before forecast. The oil paint withstood the hose-like drenching. I finished the bottom half (the reflection) back home. Finally set up a "studio" on our screened in back porch and painted a bit more slowly. I used a photo from a humid morning walk down the hill from our house. "Poor Farm Swamp" (12x16 oil on canvas sheet) is pretty much what it looked and FELT like. The beavers have left, but their lodge remains special. Been plein air painting like crazy (21 without a studio piece) mainly because I don't HAVE a studio on the road. Thus my paintings look a bit "sketchy." This one, "Slobody Farm" (6x8 oil in linen sheet) is what became of an upscale equestrian facility. Now it's a study in busted fences and shadow color.

Slobody Farm sounds like a diet camp, but it's probably named after a distant owner, probably eastern European. It's now part of Amherst's conservation area. Remember running through fields as kids? Not now. Ticks.

Here's a little guy (5"'x7") painted in the shade of a La Quinta dumpster. "Spotted Knapweed" fulfilled my desire TO GET OUT THERE, despite neither much time nor a destination. I spotted this composition on the way to my vehicle to scout out something to paint. Much better on foot.

Finishing up a hot, humid week in Orleans (Cape Cod), Massachusetts. Greenheads (man-eating flies) seem to have hatched mid-week. Here are a few of my 9 plein air studies. Painting along the shore relies on a cool palette (blues, greens), the opposite of the southwest's canyons. Next week I'll send out my quarterly "painting journey" newsletter.
