Since 1980, CoCA has served the Pacific Northwest as a catalyst and forum for the advancement, understanding, and development of contemporary art.

Mission: CoCA serves the Pacific Northwest as a catalyst and forum for the advancement, development, and understanding of Contemporary Art. History: CoCA has been a vital part of contemporary art in the Northwest for 43 years and has operated galleries and produced events throughout the region over that time period.

Inspired by the work and wisdom of Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore , and credit to her for the title of our October exhibition, Valeria Espinal Val (Valeria Haven Espinal) invites you to join us on October 24th for a conversation on artistic research, and how artists approach research and sharing knowledge as we reflect on the history of the Seattle contemporary art scene and beyond. CoCA’s statement of purpose, dated October 26th, 1980, declared “We advocate the formation of a contemporary art center in Seattle. The principal goal of the center is to be a catalyst and a forum for the advancement and understanding of contemporary art. The center will energetically participate in both current and evolving issues in contemporary art. This will be done through exhibitions, residencies, special projects, publications, and public discussions. The scope of the center will be regional, national, and international. The center does not intend to acquire a permanent collection, choosing instead to stimulate and respond to new activity.” While CoCA does not keep a permanent collection, we do keep an archive. As we look to our 46th anniversary since declaring our purpose, Center on Contemporary Art invites you to engage with its extensive history and activate the archives.

Thanks to Collins Pub for giving us the opportunity to showcase so many of our CoCA Member Artists over the past several years. Collins was a hotspot for artists to hang out after Pioneer Square First Thursday Art Walk, and a hub of energy in the neighborhood. We're sad to see you go.
