The Top Ten Reasons I Love AJ & The Zig Zags
Ten They are cool dudes. They call me their superfan. I am so honored. I’m 70 and they said I’m their demographic. Ha!
Nine Ty’s drumming is pretty damn good, Randy’s bass is pretty good, too, for someone who picked it up less than a year ago.
Eight Ty’s singing isn’t bad and it goes well with AJ’s
Seven Who else is willing to drive all the way up to Maine to play a bunch of dive bars to get some New England love? They are out of Phenix City, for God’s sake!
Six Some of their songs are funny and great music. “Lighters” and “Upper Class Trash” are great examples.
Five AJ has a haunting voice, distinctive, unlike any other voice I have ever heard. Hard hitting but also soulful. Listen to “A Little Reaction” if you don’t believe me.
Four They put rap in their song “Dirty Damn Thang”, and normally this would be a HUGE NEGATIVE to me, but it really sounds appropriate. I’m hoping Randy eventually learns to rap so they’ll have it in their live gigs.
Three The guitar riffs sound like a combination of southern rock Molly Hatchet, the Outlaws (the band-group NOT Waylon and Willie), a little Carlos Santana, and something I’ve never heard but want to hear more.
Two It’s from the heart, real life stuff, like not having enough money to keep the lights on, and hearing something that makes your ears bleed, and blood shot eyes and a foggy brain stuck to the sofa. Lots of us haven’t been there but…
We can relate.
And the number One reason I love this band is:
The more I listen to it
the more I want to listen to it.
My rule is to only listen to their music the whole week prior to their performance. To my surprise It gets easier and I want more! That’s how it was with Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Steely Dan, and Led Zeppelin. Yes, i just grouped them with those giants of my generation’s music. You start to appreciate the depth of AJ&TZZs because
It is that good.
Listen to their music, if it doesn’t grab you by the brain stem, fine, not your style. Go back to Taylor, Ella, Walker, Ed, Harry, or whoever you feel it is you like. We are all different, but you won’t know until you give it at least two songs. Please (asking nicely here) download/play “Dirty Damn Thang”, and “Ride On Out”. They represent the two ends of the spectrum. If that doesn’t do it, well at least you’ll know.
But until then (you’ve given it a chance), don’t tell me I don’t know good music when I hear it.
And yes I wrote this in the middle of the night because I had to get it out of my brain so I can sleep peacefully.
Excited to see them again in The Jailhouse Saturday night.
