The Theatre discipline teaches understanding of current acting techniques and modern vocational skills to encourage student success in their artistic endeavors. The Theatre program at MiraCosta College is committed to artistic enrichment and appreciatio

n of the theatre arts for all students. The academic discipline seeks to present opportunities for students (1) to develop an appreciation for theatre; (2) to improve the knowledge and skills required to work in the theatre arts professionally and in related careers; (3) to gain awareness, as participants or audience members, of the influences of theatre in the world. The faculty is dedicated to excellence in Theatre education that emphasizes transfer education, personal growth, professional preparatory training and community involvement. Consequently, participation with theatre production activities is vital for all majors as is challenging scholastics and theoretical study. The mainstage production season is composed of four stylistically different plays each year. To reflect our multi-cultural student population, all casting is considered color blind to all who audition. For further training, The Actor’s Academy offers a conservatory style program that focuses on classical actor training and performing the works of William Shakespeare. The theatre facilities include a 247 seat proscenium theatre has many unique features including a vomitorium and flexible thrust stage and the Little Theatre, a small proscenium space used primarily for experimental theatre. Look at all these talented faces of the cast for A Midsummer Night’s Dream. A big shout-out to all the amazing students who came out to audition last week, and to our stage management team for keeping everything running like clockwork.

If you missed auditions or didn’t get cast, fret not! There are still opportunities to get involved behind the scenes. To join the crew, you can add the DRAMA 210 class in SURF. Or, if you’d like to volunteer and help support our program, consider joining the Backstage Players Club, MCC Backstage Players Official.

We are holding auditions for A Midsummer Night’s Dream before school starts so we can hit the ground running when the semester starts!

Where: MiraCosta College Theatre
When: August 11th, 5:30 PM
What: One Shakespearean Monologue not to exceed 1:30 minutes in length.

Callbacks will begin at 6:30 PM on the same night and are by invitation only.

Rehearsal and Performance:

A Midsummer Night’s Dream rehearses August 17th- September 23rd. If cast, you will be required to enroll in a course.

Running: September 24th-October 4th

Hard to believe the school year is almost over, and we will gather together next Monday to celebrate the year’s accomplishments as a department. Once the awards are over, the dance party begins, lasting until 9pm with a brief strike to wrap up. This year, BSP has decided that our theme is Fairytale Masquerade. You’re highly recommended to dress accordingly.
