Something to share with your children and students. Quite fascinating!

Scorpions are truly remarkable arachnids with extreme survival abilities that have fascinated scientists.

Firstly, it's true that scorpions can slow their metabolism so drastically that they can survive without food for up to a year, particularly in laboratory conditions.

This is possible because they are ectothermic (cold-blooded) and use very little energy when inactive.

The claim that they can hold their breath for up to six days is also accurate to a degree.

Scorpions breathe through structures called book lungs, and in response to adverse conditions such as flooding or chemical exposure, they can shut down their respiratory system and go into a near-dormant state for several days.

However, exact durations may vary based on species and environmental conditions.

Regarding climbing ability, while not all scorpions are excellent climbers, many species possess small claw-like structures (called tarsal claws) on their feet that enable them to grip and scale rough surfaces such as bark, rocks, or walls.

Perhaps the most fascinating fact is that scorpions glow a blue-green color under ultraviolet (UV) light, thanks to substances in their exoskeleton, particularly a compound called beta-carboline. This trait is used by scientists and researchers to locate and study them at night using black lights.
