The new exhibition “Seeing the Cinema: Photographic Visions of Movie Theaters” explores the movie theater as both architectural icon and cultural form through a range of photographic practices, offering a powerful meditation on what it has meant—and continues to mean—to gather in the dark to watch stories unfold on a screen.

In Nayla Al Khaja’s dark fairy tale BAAB, the audience is plunged into seemingly ordinary domestic spaces that are transformed into an emotional landscape of fear and trauma.

Even scarier than the film’s psychological horror-trip is the fact that it has been so hard to see outside of the region in which it was made. Despite al Khaja’s breakthrough talent as the first female Emirati filmmaker, the delighted reviews out of BAAB’s premiere at the Cairo International Film Festival, a theatrical run throughout the MENA world, and a collaboration with two-time Oscar award-winning Indian film composer A.R. Rahman, the film has never been invited to screen in the US…until now!

Don’t miss your chance to see it this afternoon at 2PM!

The original 1978 tv spot for MAGIC scarred a generation of unsuspecting kids, leading networks to pull the commercial from the air shortly after it debuted.

So it’s only right that we bring it back for spooky season.

Genuinely unsettling, this shadowy, emotionally gripping thriller about a ventriloquist and his foul-mouthed dummy is diabolically effective in every way. MAGIC screens in 35mm this Sunday, part of our series The Originals.

Tickets available online and in-person.

Across more than four decades the Bronx-born-and-raised Stanley Kubrick produced a filmography we likely will never see again. On the occasion of Criterion’s new box set, The Complete Kubrick, MoMI is pleased to present the legendary director’s full cinematic corpus on the big screen, where his films all must be experienced.

Opening November 1 with the U.S. theatrical premiere of THE SHINING: International Version with Steadicam inventor Garrett Brown and archivist and producer of The Complete Kubrick box set Michael Chaiken in conversation.
