Join our upcoming workshop! 𝗖𝗔𝗠𝗘𝗥𝗔 𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗬: 𝗟𝗘𝗡𝗦-𝗕𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗗 𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗦 📸

𝗡𝗢𝗩 𝟭𝟯–𝟭𝟱, join filmmaker and photographer 𝗞𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗸 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗵 [Khalik Article] for a three-day workshop exploring lens-based storytelling as a practice of presence, connection, and encounter.

Across street photography, portraiture, and poetic documentary, Khalik has developed a fiercely original approach to image-making grounded in close attention to the people he photographs and films. Over the weekend, he’ll unpack the intricacies of his method—both material and spiritual—and introduce participants to the philosophy he calls the “Camera Ministry.”

What does it mean to truly see another person? How can a camera become a means for connection rather than simply a tool for observation? How do intuition, repetition, proximity, conversation, trust, and vulnerability enter into the making of an image?

Through screenings, conversations, hands-on exercises, and a creative feedback session, we’ll think closely about the relationships that form on either side of the lens and the responsibilities that come with making images of others.

Khalik will be joined by an incredible group of artists expanding the conversation around what happens when a camera mediates an encounter: filmmaker and cinematographer 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝘃𝗮𝘂𝗻 𝗠𝗶𝘇𝗿𝗮𝗵𝗶 [Shevaun Mizrahi] will discuss her transition from cinematographer to director and the meeting of magical realism and vérité in her work, while legendary hip-hop photographer and cultural archivist 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹 𝗚𝗦 [Jamil GS] will reflect on photography as a form of cultural memory.

Come ready to look closely, make images, share work, and reconsider what can happen when picking up a camera becomes an act of attention to another person and the world around you.

An 83-foot tapestry, seventeen years in the making, and a community’s history of resistance stitched into twelve embroidered panels. 🪡

Join us for a special screening of Jeanne C. Finley’s [ Jeanne C. Finley ] A RADICAL THREAD, followed by a conversation with filmmaker Lynne Sachs [ Lynne Sachs ]!

In the late 1960s, hundreds of families seeking an alternative to American consumer culture settled on California’s San Juan Ridge, building a back-to-the-land community rooted in collective living and environmental stewardship. Over the decades, they organized against clear-cutting, river damming, and open-pit gold mining, building a remarkable legacy of environmental resistance. Now, as climate-driven wildfires threaten the region, the future of the community hangs in the balance.

At the heart of Finley’s film is an extraordinary tapestry created by Marsha Stone and a collective of artists and community members over seventeen years. Weaving together the tapestry’s intricate panels, archival footage of poet Gary Snyder, reflections from Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan spokesperson Shelly Covert, and the voices of Ridge residents, the film explores how histories of struggle, survival, and collective action can be preserved and passed on.

Enter the universe of three mujra dancers in Pakistan as they dodge state censors and violence to vie for stardom.

We’re thrilled to join forces with our friends at 犄角旮旯nooks & crannies for a special Q***r History Month screening of Saad Khan’s [ Saad Khan ] SHOWGIRLS OF PAKISTAN [ Showgirls Of Pakistan ], presented alongside Khajistan and Decrim NY!

Moving through the Punjabi theater industry, the film follows three women navigating state censorship, violence, desire, and the pursuit of fame. Weaving together intimate vérité, phone calls, social media streams, and home videos, Khan brings us into a world of extraordinary performers determined to make their own rules, onstage and off.

Following the screening, we’ll be joined by director Saad Khan and art director and co-editor Joey Chriqui [ joey chriqui ] for a conversation guided by artist Pranav Sood [ Pranav Sood ] about the film and their work with Khajistan, the New York-based archive and press dedicated to preserving censored, banned, and overlooked print and audiovisual culture from the Middle World.

We’ll also have a special selection of Khajistan publications and merch available throughout the evening, with the event raising funds for DecrimNY and their work to decriminalize, decarcerate, and destigmatize s*x trades in New York. Special thanks to co-programmer Del Holton [ 👼🏻 del ]!

The fourth iteration of the fellowship welcomes filmmakers Beatriz Santiago Muñoz, Ben Russell, Lee Anne Schmitt, and Simon Liu alongside writers Almudena Escobar López, Jacqueline Feldman, Tung-Hui Hu and Phil Coldiron.  We’re delighted to share these talented pairs and can’t wait to delve into the exciting and ambitious research they’re dreaming up.

𝗕𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗭 𝗦𝗔𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗔𝗚𝗢 𝗠𝗨Ñ𝗢𝗭 | 𝗔𝗟𝗠𝗨𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗔 𝗘𝗦𝗖𝗢𝗕𝗔𝗥 𝗟Ó𝗣𝗘𝗭
How might filmmaking become a way of inventing rather than representing aesthetic experiences? Their research begins with a simple proposition: that cinema’s political potential may lie less in what it shows than in the forms of relation, collaboration, shared perception, and social relations it makes possible.

𝗕𝗘𝗡 𝗥𝗨𝗦𝗦𝗘𝗟𝗟 | 𝗝𝗔𝗖𝗤𝗨𝗘𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗘 𝗙𝗘𝗟𝗗𝗠𝗔𝗡 How can nonfiction take on the revolutionary project of making time—even now—livable for all? Filmmaker Ben Russell and writer Jacqueline Feldman train their attention on documentary film’s capacity, amidst a shattering of possibilities for solidarity and encounter, to restore to lived time its relational, durational potential.  𝗟𝗘𝗘 𝗔𝗡𝗡𝗘 𝗦𝗖𝗛𝗠𝗜𝗧𝗧 | 𝗧𝗨𝗡𝗚-𝗛𝗨𝗜 𝗛𝗨
What can the intimate details of everyday life reveal about the systems that shape our world? Their research turns to domestic life and its intimate landscapes as indexes of the collapse of larger systems in the present.   𝗦𝗜𝗠𝗢𝗡 𝗟𝗜𝗨 | 𝗣𝗛𝗜𝗟 𝗖𝗢𝗟𝗗𝗜𝗥𝗢𝗡
What if the mirror documentary cinema holds up to reality were more like a funhouse? Their research approaches the documentary image as a site of opacity and distortion, one capable of producing truths irreducible to language. They asks how disorientation might become a means of deeply felt engagement rather than passive spectatorship.

Join us for a special screening and conversation with filmmaker and animator Kelly Sears [Kelly Sears], kicking off our upcoming workshop 𝗨𝗡𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗬 𝗔𝗥𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗦: 𝗖𝗢𝗟𝗟𝗔𝗚𝗘, 𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 & 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗥𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗩𝗘!

Seasons vanish mid-frame, a telephoto lens reveals a spirit dimension, and a cross-species rebellion takes shape!

Moving between documentary and speculative fiction, Sears creates uncanny worlds where familiar images take on strange new lives. Spanning nearly two decades of her practice, this program brings together films that cut, layer, and reanimate archival and original imagery, transforming thousands of photographic and filmic fragments into unexpected narratives.

What happens when images are pulled from their original contexts and made to tell entirely different stories? Through collage and experimental animation, Sears opens up new ways of looking at the past, unsettling received histories and imagining alternate futures.

Following the screening, Sears will join writer, educator, and editor Catherine Taylor for a conversation. Come through!

We’re so excited to add another poet and diva into the mix for this special night — 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗮 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱 [ Marisa Crawford ]! And to share that we will have a community ofrenda — A true diva never really dies, does she?

It’s time to invoke those merely departed from this plane, them baddies in our bones, keeping us keeping the flame. We, the nearly departed, will lay the marigolds on the altar together. Literally! Bring through objects, amulets, and spells to commemorate divas in their lives to add to the mix.

This night is curated by poet 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗼 [ ] and writer/curator 𝗥𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝗥𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 [ Rachael Rakes ]and it merges live performance, reading, sound, and moving image — not quite a reading, not quite performance, not ekphrasis. WS2DOATN is a porous encounter between words, images, and whatever slips through.
