In this series we take a closer look at the ceramic process of artisan Aide Ramírez Cedillo, tracing how raw clay slowly transforms into a finished piece.

The process begins with preparing the clay, carefully kneaded until it reaches the right consistency. The form is then hand-built, gradually shaped and refined until the piecel’s proportions feel balanced.

Once partially dry, the surface is smoothed and burnished, compressing the clay and creating the soft satin finish characteristic of this tradition.

The decoration follows, painted by hand with extremely fine brushes to create intricate geometric patterns.
Finally, the piece is fired outdoors, where heat and flame permanently harden the clay and reveal the subtle tones of the finished ceramic.

A slow and meticulous process where earth, fire, and the artist’s hand come together.

Join us to see these works in person at Aide Ramírez Cedillo’s exhibition, opening March 19 at Estudio Rombo.

Coraza

Sculptural ceramic vessel inspired by the protective spines of the pochote tree, native to southern Mexico. Hand-built and fired in a low-temperature wood kiln, the piece is finished with a black clay slip and sealed with beeswax, giving the surface a rich, satin depth. Created by Aide Cedillo in the Mixteca region of Oaxaca, Coraza reflects a rare balance between traditional ceramic processes and a bold, contemporary form.

Oaxaca is made up of eight different regions, each with many diverse communities, yet all united by the cultural and economic history of clay, a craft with an incalculable value to Oaxaca, and Mexico at large. We believe ceramicists are more than artisans, they are really artists of clay, practicing an artform that is used distinctively in each of the eight regions. That is because aside from utilitarian and decorative purposes, clay holds an exclusive use for different traditions in each community. The pieces created are therefore more than just objects, they are a form of cultural expression for each region.

The evolution of clay can be understood by the objects and fragments that have been obtained in different archeological areas in Oaxaca. Through generations of studying these pieces, we can understand the use they had, whether ornamental, utilitarian, or ritualistic.

When speaking about the process, we must understand that clay is treated differently from one community to the next. What gives each piece life are unique elements that belong to a certain population, as well as a particular combination of these elements that is deemed adequate. Additionally, it takes a unique and masterful use of the four elements that allow these clay artists to keep creating specific patterns and objects that are true to the way of their region.

Monte Albán is believed to have been originally called either the Hill of the Jaguar or the Hill of the Clouds by the early Zapotec people.
The theory for Hill of the Jaguar comes from the many representations, in both ceramics and stone, of this animal, which symbolizes power. As for the Hill of the Clouds, the belief is that it refers to the flowers of a tree named “cazahuate, “ that yields white flowers and can be found throughout the entire archeological site.

In the Oaxacan village of Atzompa, the complexity of pottery production includes a plethora of designs, both for decorative and utilitarian purposes, which stand as proof of a long history of ceramic manufacturing within its community.

This is an oven that was discovered in the archeological area of Atzompa. It is more than 1200 years old and it is evidence of a dedication to pottery in this region since pre-Hispanic times.
