Ofrenda de Barro · Collective Exhibition

Rooted in the traditions of Día de Mu***os, Ofrenda de Barro explores the offering as an act of remembrance, connection, and celebration.

For this collective presentation, artists reinterpret the traditional ceramic vessels of Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua, transforming a shared form through their own materials, techniques, and artistic languages. Each piece offers a distinct perspective on the ofrenda, bringing together memory, tradition, and contemporary creation.

Hand-built earthenware, open-fired, with natural clay slip

Hand-built by Florencia C. in Los Reyes Metzontla, this vessel takes its form from the pochote, a native tree of the Tehuacán Valley whose trunk is covered in conical thorns. The piece is open-fired in the open air with wood, without a kiln. Smoke and direct flame leave the shifting dark tones on its lower body, so no two pieces fire alike. After the first firing, a natural clay slip (engobe) is applied to the upper body and the piece is fired a second time. The result is a pale, earthy shoulder that contrasts with the smoke-darkened base.

Ten-Mouthed Cántaro by Silvia Martínez, Tlahuiltoltepec, Oaxaca.

A distinctive vessel featuring ten openings, hand-crafted in burnished clay and polished with a river stone and bull horn. Fired in an open-air kiln, its sculptural form highlights the materiality and traditional techniques of pottery from Tlahuiltoltepec.

The Indigo Process: From Plant to Dye · Santiago Niltepec, Oaxaca.

During a visit to Santiago Niltepec, Istmo, Oaxaca, the Rombo team had the opportunity to witness the traditional process of obtaining indigo from the jiquilite plant.

The process begins with the plant fermenting in large water tanks overnight, releasing its pigment into the water. The following day, the water is vigorously beaten for approximately five hours to oxygenate it and transform the fermented liquid into indigo dye. Once the pigment settles and separates from the remaining liquid, the natural dye is obtained.

Discover this ancestral process firsthand at our AÑIL Dyeing Workshop, where you’ll explore traditional indigo techniques and create your own one-of-a-kind T-shirt to take home.

Laberinto Azul by Master Artisan Christian Mendoza, Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca.

Woven on a traditional pedal loom, this piece brings together different shades of blue created through natural indigo dyeing, with a white labyrinth emerging at its center.

Originally presented as part of Laberinto, our exhibition at Rombo, the piece showcases the expressive possibilities of indigo in contemporary textile art.

The same indigo dyeing techniques will be explored in our upcoming AÑIL Dyeing Workshop, where participants will create and take home their own one-of-a-kind indigo T-shirt.
