Heritage Malta's Diagnostic Science Laboratories are responsible for scientific analysis in support of cultural heritage artefacts.

Heritage Malta’s Diagnostic Science Laboratories (DSL) are the national laboratories responsible for the application of scientific solutions within the cultural heritage sector. Solutions range from the examination of items to analysing their materials using analytical tools with a team of qualified personnel. The laboratories carry out scientific diagnostics in conservation-restoration and curatorial scenarios for the documentation and material characterisation of art, objects, archaeological and architectural sites as well as monuments. Whilst working in a multidisciplinary team comprising of scientists, historians and conservator-restorers, the laboratory promotes the upkeep of standards and applies scientific procedures backed up with the latest technological training on the services offered. This ensures that the information communicated to a conservator-restorer will be beneficial to the conditional state of the object, in the process advancing the understanding of its mechanisms of deterioration. This guarantees the provision of information for the continued care of historical and archaeological artefacts. The same standard is also exercised in the quest of answering historical questions of curatorial importance. The laboratories’ main duties also include the research and promotion of scientific applications within cultural heritage for purposes of advancing current scientific methodologies and contributing to more knowledge on the artefacts analysed. Whilst the laboratories’ primary focus is on the National Collection, services to bodies outside Heritage Malta are also offered. These include services to private collectors, conservators/restorers, organisations as well as the general industry such as the engineering and manufacturing sectors.

We are proud to be contributing towards this project by applying ancient DNA profiling alongside isotopic dietary and provenance analysis. Through new knowledge on past civilisations we learn more about their parental linkages, migration, aptitude towards certain food stuffs over others, and more.

Earlier this month, the Manager of the Diagnostic Science Laboratories (DSL) visited the Palace Museum in Beijing, China, to discuss exciting opportunities for future collaboration between the laboratories of the two institutions.

During his visit, he also attended the 4th Global Museum Directors Forum, engaging with museum leaders from around the world and contributing to scientific discussions on the future of museums, cultural heritage, and international cooperation. Also present at the forum were Heritage Malta's International Relations Manager and Malta's Ambassador for China.

International collaboration on a broader, transcontinental scale is essential for fostering innovation, encouraging fresh perspectives, and ensuring long-term development. By sharing expertise, knowledge, and diverse experiences, both institutions stand to strengthen their scientific capabilities and enrich their professionals, creating lasting benefits for the future.

We look forward to building this partnership and exploring new opportunities together.

Last month, staff from our Diagnostic Science Laboratories - Heritage Malta attended the 45th International Symposium on Archaeometry (ISA) 2026 as part of our ongoing commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

The conference provided an excellent opportunity to keep up to date with the latest trends, research, and analytical approaches in archaeometry, helping us continue to deliver the highest standards in heritage science.

Beyond the scientific sessions, the conference also strengthened our network of collaborators, fostering new connections and reinforcing existing partnerships that will support future research and collaboration.

We are grateful for the opportunity to learn, share knowledge, and bring new insights back to our work in the preservation and study of cultural heritage.

Last month, we had the pleasure of hosting two very different but equally inspiring groups.

The first visit welcomed students from St Joseph School Blata L-Bajda where we highlighted the important role that women play in science and showcased the diverse career opportunities available within scientific fields.

The second visit hosted officials and delegates from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) , who were in Malta for the National Liaison Officer Meeting, organised by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs (Affarijiet Barranin)

We are always delighted to open our doors to visitors, sharing our work and demonstrating how science contributes to cultural heritage, research, and international collaboration.
