🎓🔥 SMOKEWOOD SHACK SCHOOL — LESSON #14
WHY DOES YOUR BBQ TEMPERATURE KEEP DROPPING? 🌡️
You've got the charcoal burning, the food's cooking nicely, and everything seems under control…
Then you look at the thermometer.
Where's all the heat gone?! 😂
Don't worry. There are a few common reasons your BBQ might be losing temperature.
🔥 1. NOT ENOUGH BURNING CHARCOAL
If your fire is too small for the cooking time or temperature you need, it'll struggle to maintain the heat.
💨 2. RESTRICTED AIRFLOW
Charcoal needs oxygen to burn. Ash blocking the vents or closing them too far can gradually starve your fire.
🪵 3. YOUR FUEL IS RUNNING LOW
For longer cooks, you may need to add more charcoal before the temperature drops too far.
🌬️ 4. WIND AND COLD WEATHER
Cold weather can increase heat loss, while wind can affect both airflow and how quickly your fuel burns.
🍖 5. KEEPING THE LID OPEN
Every time you lift the lid, you lose heat and disturb the airflow. Give your BBQ time to settle after checking your food.
💡 THE SHACK'S TOP TIP
Make small vent adjustments, use good-quality lumpwood charcoal and allow the temperature to stabilise before making another change.
And remember, a steady fire is usually better than constantly chasing the thermometer!
🔥 GOOD CHARCOAL. GOOD FIRE CONTROL. BETTER BBQ.
