Kulbroen

Kulbroen Kulbroen is a cultural institution and urban space at Sydhavnen in Aarhus. Designed for creators and guests of the cultural scene.

AaBKC Social ➕ ALRUM Residency ➕ Kulbroen Explorers

Join us for bread & conversation on Wednesday, May 27, at 0930-1100!

Our Explorers, Line Sandvad Mengers & Ehan Harshal Halimun, want to have an informal chat with anyone interested in the Sydhavnen neighborhood. We want to hear your thoughts on the past, present, and future in this area - and to specifically dive into the research question at the center of the residency: "How can art occupy, transform, and activate public space in Sydhavnen?"

You will also hear from our Explorers about their approach and work so far in the Kulbroen residency in ALRUM at Aarhus Billedkunstcenter / Aarhus Center for Visual Art. Bread, coffee, and tea are on us, and participation is free. You do not need to be a local user of Sydhavnen to participate. The event will be held in English, but reach out nonetheless 🇩🇰

➡ Want to join the breakfast and conversation? Sign up via DM or email to [email protected] 🖤

Sydhavnen, meet your new Explorers!

14 qualified teams and individuals applied for our ALRUM residency, done in collaboration with Aarhus Billedkunstcenter / Aarhus Center for Visual Art. The residency starts this coming Monday, and we’ve been quiet for a bit to prep and map out the journey ahead together with two new faces in the Kulbroen family.

We have chosen two inspiring and talented Explorers, who bring together two practices we believe complement each other in a really exciting way:

-

⭐ Line Sandvad Mengers

An artist whose practice engages people, everyday objects, geographies, and movement across multiple realms. Her work often stages situations that encourage dialogue, reflection, or subtle forms of collective action.

-

⭐ Ehan Harshal Halimun

An architect working with collaborative and community-driven processes, exploring how people can actively shape the spaces around them through shared experiences, observation, and co-building. With experience in habitation and tectonics, his practice moves fluidly between architecture, social process, and public engagement.

-

What excited us about bringing these two together was a shared curiosity towards participation and public life — but from two very different perspectives and disciplines. One works more through artistic and social encounters, the other through spatial thinking and collaborative design processes.

Rather than arriving with fixed answers, the residency is built around exploration: walking, observing, testing, talking, building relationships, and seeing what can emerge through being present in a place over time.
Together, they will spend three weeks in ALRUM exploring Sydhavnen through conversations, encounters, walks, workshops, and experiments unfolding between art, architecture, and everyday life.

The residency unfolds May 18 - June 07 at ALRUM in Aarhus Billedkunstcenter. Keep an eye out for when our two Explorers will be inviting the public into their ongoing process.

We are really looking forward to this one!

Quick answers to some of the questions we’ve been asked over the last few weeks about the Kulbroen residency in ALRUM at Aarhus Billedkunstcenter / Aarhus Center for Visual Art.

The application deadline is coming up on March 27. The residency at ALRUM is supported by Kulturudviklingspuljen at Aarhus Kommune.

ALRUM - Frequently Asked Questions:

❔When is the deadline?
Send us your application (in Danish or English) no later than 12:00 on Friday, March 27. We’re excited to hear about your approach and thoughts!

❔Are we getting paid?
Yes, DKK 12.000 as a fixed fee for each of the two explorers (paid as a B-honorar or invoiced ex VAT), funded by Aarhus Billedkunstcenter and Kulbroen.

❔Room and board?
Kulbroen does not provide housing or daily meals throughout the residency, i.e., no room and board. The production budget covers catering at the social and open events.

❔Is it a full-time commitment?
No, we do not expect you to stay in ALRUM day and night for the three weeks, so other commitments can still be honored. We expect the two-explorer team to work independently, deciding when and how to work to move the project forward and achieve desired results.

❔Danish or English?
You can apply in either language, so no need to, e.g., translate a whole portfolio. Dialogue during the residency will be in both languages. The public-facing activities and final proposals will be in English, and we will assist with this.

❔What will be created during the residency?
We do not expect fully finished projects at the end. We expect you to explore and experiment with an open mind and see what materializes during the residency. We expect visual materials and prototypes to be created to facilitate dialogue with others, but not necessarily a full exhibition. It can be drawn, painted, printed, built, or the like - totally up to you.

❔What will the outcome of the residency be?
At the end, we will have an open discussion about how to proceed with the outcome and materials as they appear at that time. The three weeks will not bring us all the way across the finish line, but will hopefully create interesting dialogue and build the foundation for some great work afterwards.
