Do you have a live recording from a concert or maybe working on releasing a live session? We’d love to help realize the full potential of the performance.
For the last 10 years, we’ve been recording, mixing and releasing live sessions on our YouTube channel, hitting over 3 million views, as well as performing work for other organizations like KEXP.
Mixing live recordings is very different from studio recordings. Most of the time you have less than ideal acoustics, sometimes straight up horrible to be honest, and you need to figure out bleed in a very different way. Specifically on the vocal mics that are pointing directly back at the drums and amps 99% of the time.
If you approach it right, you can lean into the mic bleed and let it help you push the intensity of the mix. But more often than not, it’s a balancing act between pushing your vocals forward enough while still being able to bring out the instruments and get everything sitting nicely in the mix.
The aim should always be to make it sound as good as it could have in the studio, while keeping the intensity that comes out in a live performance. That’s what we always try to aim for.
Having done this for more than 10 years, working in a lot of different locations and venues, really gives you great chaos management. I’d say that’s probably the best skill you can develop for mixing live recordings, next to going with your intuition faster than internet forums can come up with new audio rules for you to drown in on YouTube.
