Yesterday, we had the pleasure of being guests at , where we shared and discovered a wide range of artistic projects and research processes.

Although brief, the gathering was an intense and inspiring exchange of visions, which ultimately brought together, in the same room, artists, writers, choreographers, dancers, and performers from all over Switzerland and across the world.

A heartfelt thank you to Lilli and the Kaserne team for their warm welcome, generosity, and care. And, of course, to all the artists for giving us the chance to dive into your fascinating practices and for sharing your experiments and experiences with us. 🤸❤️

What a fantastic Open Studio last week! 🫰🎉

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to our artists' presentations. It was a joy to spend the evening discovering more about our residents and sharing their inspiring work with you.

Helen Macdonald guided us through her work, revealing the real places and the clues that shaped her latest story. At the same time, Lorena Solís Bravo created a whole installation environment in her studio, presenting three video projects and speaking about her deep interest in nature, and archival postcolonial perspectives.

We feel incredibly lucky to host such talented artists and such beautiful people. Thank you for your presence, enthusiasm, and support. These wonderful encounters wouldn't be possible without you. 🥂

Helen Macdonald is the author of the bestselling memoir H is for Hawk, recently released as a movie starring Claire Foy and Brendan Gleeson, the essay collection Vesper Flights, a cultural history of falcons, Falcon, and three collections of poetry. With Sin Blaché, they wrote the sci-fi novel Prophet, and they are currently working on a book about Midway Atoll, albatrosses, and the end of the world. Macdonald taught history of science at the University of Cambridge and has long been fascinated by how our attitudes to nature are shaped by cultural history. They’ve been involved with raptor research and conservation projects across Eurasia, written and presented television documentaries for PBS and the BBC, and currently live in Suffolk, England, with three parrots.

Helen is writer-in-residence at Atelier Mondial, in collaboration with Literaturhaus Basel, and will stay in Basel until late November.

You will have the opportunity to meet Helen and Lorena Solís Bravo during our OPEN STUDIOS this Thursday, 15 October, from 4-8pm. We will be serving pumpking soup and apple c***r to keep you warm and nourished. Come by!

Pavel Aguilar (.aguilar_) ist unser Artist-in-Residence in Taipeh, Taiwan. Er hat das Stipendium gewonnen und seit September hat seine Forschungsphase begonnen, die bis Dezember dauern wird. Wir haben ihn gebeten, uns seine ersten Eindrücke und Gedanken mitzuteilen. Hier ist, was er uns geschickt hat:

"Die vergangenen eineinhalb Monate in Taipeh waren für mich eine unglaublich spannende und bereichernde Erfahrung. Besonders schön war es, diese Zeit mit einer sehr vielfältigen und besonderen Gruppe von Künstlerinnen und Künstlern zu verbringen. Gemeinsam haben wir ein wunderbares Gemeinschaftsgefühl entwickelt, das diese Residenz für mich noch wertvoller macht.
Ich hatte auch die Gelegenheit, die taiwanesische Kultur besser kennenzulernen und tiefer in das Leben Taipehs und seine lebendige Kunst- und Kulturszene einzutauchen. Es ist eine faszinierende Stadt, in der sich Modernität und eine reiche, jahrtausendealte Geschichte auf einzigartige Weise miteinander verbinden."

We are delighted to cordially invite you to our Open Studios. This time, we are focusing on two of our artists: writer Helen Macdonald and visual artist Lorena Solís Bravo.
Our Open Studio will place at the same time as the Mesh Festival.

Helen Macdonald (literature, United Kingdom) is the internationally acclaimed author of H is for Hawk, Vesper Flights, and Prophet (co-written with Sin Blanché), and is currently Writer-in-Residence at Atelier Mondial in collaboration with Literaturhaus Basel. Writing across memoir, essays, poetry, and speculative fiction, they explore themes of memory, grief, longing, and our relationship with the natural world. Birds, landscapes, and the lives of animals feature prominently in their work, alongside deeply human questions of loss and belonging. We are thrilled to welcome Helen and invite you to to meet them and engage in conversation about their books, their artistic process, and the stories that inspire their writing.

Lorena Solís Bravo (visual art, Peru/Netherlands) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work moves fluidly between video, sculpture, ceramics, installation, and artistic research. Drawing on q***r ecology, speculative storytelling, and close observation of the more-than-human world, she creates poetic environments in which bodies, landscapes, technologies, plants, insects, and memories become deeply entangled. Her practice explores identity not as something fixed, but as a constantly transforming process shaped by relationships, exchanges, and acts of coexistence. Through evocative imagery and carefully crafted material encounters, Solís Bravo invites viewers into worlds where boundaries between human and non-human, fact and fiction, intimacy and transformation begin to dissolve, opening up new ways of imagining how we live together on a changing planet.

Explore their work, discover their creative processes, and enjoy a relaxed evening of conversation, curiosity, and artistic exchange. We’ll be serving snacks and drinks as you wander through the studios.

has won the residency at Atelier Mondial, by the Institute Art Gender Nature at HGK Basel FHNW, with the support of Artus Peru. The residency starts mid-September and runs for three months.
Lorena Solís Bravo works across video, sculpture, ceramics, and artistic research. Her practice investigates human identity as a relational, q***r, and continuously transforming condition, shaped through entanglements between human and non-human life, technologies, territories, and systems of knowledge. She studied sculpture at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, and her work has been supported by institutions including the Mondriaan Fund, AFK, and Stroom. This year she won the CIFO x Ars Electronica Award with Entre barros y fragmentos, premiering at Ars Electronica in September.

✨ From July to December, artist Zora Weidkuhn () is living and working in Oaxaca, Mexico, as part of the residency exchange programme between Atelier Mondial and our partner organizations. We asked Zora to share some insights into her journey so far and how this experience is shaping and expanding her artistic practice. 🌿🧵

"My stay in the city of Oaxaca, Mexico, has been shaped by women who are masters of their craft. At the market, Celerina taught me how to weave baskets with palm fibers; in Santa Maria del Tule, Laura taught me how to weave using a hip belt; and Carolina taught me how to dye yarn with local plants such as indigo and cempasuchil.
I’m struck by the richness and knowledge contained in these plants, which women have been passing down for generations and centuries. They weave and embroider huipiles—traditional blouses featuring motifs from their daily lives, such as flowers, butterflies, or dogs. Oaxaca is a vibrant melting pot of Zapotec ruins, Spanish colonial urban planning, newly opened cafés and bars, and huge markets that invite me to get lost in them. I am impressed by how the city preserves its customs and diverse languages despite new and challenging developments, such as gentrification and water shortages, and by how each village continues its own textile craft. Using the newly acquired technique of *Telar de Cintura*—weaving with a waist belt—I transform what I’ve seen, such as the colors of house facades and patterns, into a wall hanging. I weave my experiences in Oaxaca into textile memories using local materials. Thanks to my residency in Oaxaca, I am discovering new cultures, crafts, ways of life, languages, and people who enrich my life and my work. I would like to thank the institutions and individuals whose support has made my stay in Mexico possible."

We would like to thank all participants who took the opportunity to apply through our open call for grants supporting research-based artist residencies abroad! It was a very difficult process to make a selection from among so many excellent and valuable projects, but the juries nevertheless managed to narrow down the numerous proposals with great dedication and well-reasoned justifications. Here are the names of the winners of the 2027 “Atelier Mondial” grants.

Sculpture, video, performance, installation…

Yesterday, our artists-in-residence opened their studios to the public as part of Art@Dreispitz and presented the works they developed during their residency at Atelier Mondial. From sculpture and video to performance and installation, each artist shared a unique body of work shaped by their time in Basel, as well as by the conversations and exchanges that took place throughout the residency.
