🪧 HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING? 🪧

Before there is certainty, there is a decision. Before expertise, a claim. Before knowledge, a leap.

We’re proud to announce the jury for the next annual CIVIC Billboard, an Open Call launched by CIVIC at the Basel Academy of Art and Design, moderated by Matylda Krzykowski, artistic lead of CIVIC.

Each year, CIVIC invites students, employees, alumni (groups/teams with at least one person from the HGK cosmos are also welcome) to claim the billboard as a site of public negotiation. This year’s theme — HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING? — welcomes works that speak to finding your own way—through internal feeling and external response. It turns the spotlight on authority, doubt, intuition, systems of validation, and the fragile structures that shape us. We like to see and read something on the billboard about that inner dialogue that might not be about certainty.

**Civic spaces are environments—physical or digital—that allow people to freely gather, speak, organise, and participate in public life.

How is the ever-remaining question. 🙋‍♂️How can we remain open, generous, and porous—how can institutions practice change rather than merely discuss it?

☁️ This open call feeds into a practical handbook grounded in doing—an imperfect, collective manual for creating and sustaining civic spaces across institutional and informal contexts.

🔗 Openness means deliberately working with people we don’t know and have not collaborated with before or with contributors previously unknown to us. And this is why, once again, we are launching an open call to everyone interested in sharing their thoughts, insights, and imagination on civic spaces and civic life.

The selected images will contribute to the making of our book: a practical and reflective handbook grounded in practice, focused on creating, sustaining, and reimagining civic spaces across both institutional and informal contexts.

This HOW TO CIVIC? handbook aims to come from doing—from small gestures, experiments, and practices learned inside and at the margins of institutions. It’s going to be a public, imperfect, relational manual shaped by people showing up, making room, and insisting on doing something else, or a bit more.
