A.T.I - BOX OFFICE: THE STORY BEHIND THE ALBUM
The story of the man behind the artist, a project born in 2011, and an album that carries his story beyond his lifetime.
Gaborone, Botswana - 28 September 2026
Today, 28 September 2026, Atasaone Molemogi (A.T.I) would have turned 37. Instead, today is the day Botswana hears him again with the release of his posthumous album, Box Office, bringing 18 songs that allow listeners to spend time with a side of Atasaone that existed beyond the name A.T.I - the man, the thinker, the dreamer, the complicated human being behind one of Botswana’s most recognisable artistic identities.
BOX OFFICE is more than an album being released after an artist’s passing. It is a story that began more than a decade ago. And today, through the music, that story continues.
BEYOND A.T.I - MEETING ATASAONE
For years, audiences knew him as A.T.I. The rapper. The performer. The storyteller. The artist whose words could spark conversations long after a song had ended. But behind the public identity was Atasaone - a human being navigating life, relationships, ambition, spirituality, questions about success and personal struggles.
That distinction is central to understanding BOX OFFICE
A STORY THAT STARTED IN 2011
To understand BOX OFFICE, you have to go back to 2011, when Atasaone began developing an idea influenced by Jim Carrey’s The Truman Show. He was drawn to the strange question at the centre of the film: what if your whole life felt like a movie? What if everybody was watching, and everybody had already decided what your story was supposed to become?
By then, A.T.I had already made his presence felt, and with that came expectations. There was an idea of who he was supposed to become - bigger, more successful, more certain, more accomplished. But Atasaone was not a character with a predetermined ending. He was a man trying to figure life out as he lived it.
That meant experiencing all of it: the highs and the lows, the good relationships and the complicated ones, the ambition and the uncertainty, the spirituality and the questions. It meant confronting personal struggles, including a documented battle with addiction, while continuing to wrestle with the person he was becoming
That is the Atasaone who sits behind BOX OFFICE
The album looks at the difference between the public image and the private individual - between the artist people expected to see and the man who was still trying to understand himself and the world around him. It is this human element that gives the project much of its emotional depth.
SUCCESS, WEALTH AND PURPOSE
Atasaone's reflections did not stop with his own life. BOX OFFICE also explores ideas around success, wealth, purpose and personal growth. What does it really mean to be successful? What does wealth mean beyond money? What does it mean to become better? And what happens when the expectations placed upon you begin to differ from the person you are actually becoming? These questions give the album a philosophical dimension.
His questions extend into Botswana. He questions how we see ourselves, what we call wealth, what we call success and whether we could imagine a different direction for the country. His own life became a place from which to look outward - at society, ambition, identity and the future.
18 SONGS. NO FEATURES. JUST A.T.I.
BOX OFFICE consists of 18 songs, with no featured artists. The decision leaves the listener with one central voice throughout the project. There are no guest appearances to interrupt the narrative, no other artist stepping into the story. Just Atasaone’s recorded voice, his thoughts, his experiences and his artistry. For an album that asks audiences to look beyond the public figure and listen more closely to the person, the format feels particularly fitting.
A HISTORIC RELEASE
BOX OFFICE is being presented as the first posthumous album to be released in Botswana. That gives the project significance beyond A.T.I’s individual catalogue. It also creates a broader conversation about the preservation of artists’ work after their passing and the role that music plays in keeping a creative legacy alive. Yet ultimately, the album is still about the music. Because although Atasaone is no longer here, his music continues to give audiences new reasons to talk about him. To think about him. To remember him. And to discover something new about him. That is the power of the work an artist leaves behind.
EVERYBODY KNEW A.T.I, THIS PROJECT GIVES US MORE OF ATASAONE
Everybody knew A.T.I. But Atasaone was always there too. In the questions he asked. In the things he was still trying to understand. In the contradictions, the ambition, the spirituality, the struggles and the imperfections.
Today, on his 37th birthday, we do not simply mark the release of BOX OFFICE. We return to the voice of Atasaone Molemogi - and to a story he began telling in 2011, long before he knew where it would end. It is a story that was always meant to feel like a movie. And a story that, through his music, continues to give us something to discover.
