Private pet ownership fuels the global illegal wildlife trade, a major driver of extinction for over 60% of primate species. Primates suffer severe physical and mental trauma from early maternal separation and social isolation. These long-lasting psychological impacts often cannot be fully reversed, even with expert rehabilitation, and as primates mature, they become dangerous and capable of inflicting severe injuries and transmitting deadly zoonotic diseases to humans.

Did you know that Asian elephant Siri helped pioneer the practice of voluntary animal “painting” for enrichment? In fact, Siri's artwork was published in the book “To Whom It May Concern: An Investigation of the Art of Elephants” by David Gucwa and James Ehmann in 1985.

When Siri was 13 years old, she was observed doodling spontaneously on the ground with a pebble or stick. Her efforts were noted by her caretaker, who provided drawing materials and collected the results of her endeavors. At 59, Siri still enjoys painting, and is a certified Pachyderm Picasso. Our other elephants have been given the opportunity to do the same!

Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus (EEHV) is a fatal disease and the leading cause of death for young Asian elephants, both in the wild and in human care. In 2020, this devastating disease claimed the lives of our “Little Giants,” Ajay and Batu.

Thanks to the global partnership of elephant facilities around the world, the research and commitment to finding a cure for this disease has grown exponentially. In 2022, following the opening of our state-of-the-art Animal Health Center, we were able to install an in-house PCR machine to allow for same-day blood tests for the early detection, thus early treatment, of EEHV.

In 2024, Ajay and Batu's little brothers, twins Yaad and Tukada, made history when they were amongst the first elephant calves to receive the groundbreaking 1A EEHV trial vaccine, created by virologists at Baylor College of Medicine.

With vital and continued support from our community, elephants around the world will have a greater chance at combating EEHV.

Come learn about the precious primates that call our zoo home this Sunday, August 30, during ! We will have primate Creature Chats at 1:30, 2:30, and 3:30 p.m. and information about what YOU can do to protect our planet's primate population, from using sustainable palm oil, helping fight the exploitative illegal pet trade, and dispelling common misconceptions and inaccurate portrayals of primates in the media. For years, Patrick has been a beloved ambassador at the zoo. But today, he is missing something every social camel needs, a companion. Bactrian camels are naturally social animals that thrive when living with other camels. Following the loss of his longtime companion, George, Patrick has continued to receive exceptional care from our dedicated animal care team and remains active and in good spirits, but the best long-term solution is to welcome another male Bactrian camel to be his new herd mate. Our staff are working closely with experts from the AZA to find him a new companion!
