Happy ! What a great opportunity to highlight another conservation project we are proud to be a part of, that of the endangered Massasauga Rattlesnake. Along with other partners in the AZA SAFE program, we care for an assurance population of this threatened species, which includes breeding and reintroduction into the wild.

Wait a second though - didn't we say it's world LIZARD day? Absolutely! In fact all snakes are lizards!

🚨 Something FUN just happened at Little Ray’s Nature Center… 👀

Let’s just say… we recently welcomed FIVE adorable new rescue animals to our family! ❤️🏡

These little cuties came to us from a rescue organization, and we couldn’t be more excited to give them a forever home. They’re settling in behind the scenes, getting lots of love, care, and time to adjust before they make their public debut.

Any guesses what they might be? 🤔
🐾 Furry?
🦎 Scaly?
🪶 Feathered?

We’re keeping this one a secret… for now! 🤫

We will be offering super fun and educational encounters with these cuties soon!! 🥳💕

🎉 🐢 Another year and more Endangered wood turtles are on the landscape in Ontario, Canada!

Little Ray’s has been participating in a wood turtle headstarting project since 2023, where eggs are removed from nests at risk of being detroyed, hatched, grown for two years to a size where their risk of predation is greatly reduced. This season the Endangered population grew by 12 with the release of this year’s cohorts of juveniles. Researchers will be tracking the individuals to see how they fare and whether they successfully hibernate so we can be sure our work is making a true impact on the struggling population.🙏

From early mornings to late evenings, through weekends and holidays, our keepers, trainers, educators, maintenance staff, guest services team, and animal care professionals are committed to providing the highest standard of care for the amazing animals that call Little Ray’s Nature Center home.

Their work goes far beyond feeding and cleaning. They build trust with animals through positive reinforcement training, create enriching environments that encourage natural behaviors, monitor animal health, educate thousands of guests each year, and inspire the next generation of wildlife conservationists.

To our incredible team—thank you for your compassion, dedication, expertise, and the love you show our animals every day. We are so grateful for everything you do, and we couldn’t be prouder to work alongside such an amazing group of people.

💕 Happy World Porcupine Day! 🌎

Today we’re celebrating one of North America’s most fascinating native mammals—the North American porcupine!

Did you know?

🌿 Quills aren’t actually “spines.” They are modified hairs made of keratin—the same protein found in our own hair and fingernails.

🌳 They’re excellent climbers. North American porcupines spend much of their lives in trees, using their strong claws and long tails for balance as they search for leaves, bark, buds, and other vegetation to eat.

🛡️ Their quills are an incredible defense. Contrary to popular belief, porcupines cannot shoot their quills. Instead, the quills detach easily when a predator makes contact. Each quill has tiny barbs that make them difficult to remove once embedded.

🌲 They’re important to our forests. By feeding on bark, leaves, and twigs, porcupines help shape forest ecosystems and provide habitat opportunities for other wildlife.
