Each year our students perform in two full length productions to enrapt audiences and family. Our Vaganova-based instruction has challenged the serious ballet student and engaged the younger and exploring dancer for over thirty years.

If you are choosing a ballet school this year, here are the four things we would ask about, anywhere you visit.

Is there a syllabus, so each year builds on the last? Did the teachers dance professionally? Is there a community, where the youngest dancers and the high schoolers share the same stage? And is there a real stage at the end of it, with a full production and an audience?

The performance is only a small part of what ballet teaches. The rest is who the child becomes along the way.

How to pay attention for forty-five minutes at age four. How to hear a correction without flinching. How to keep working at something that takes years. How to stand in a room.

The Stillwater Nutcracker turns thirty-five this year, and tickets are now on sale.

For thirty-five Novembers, families across the St. Croix Valley have begun their holidays here. This year the dancers of St. Croix Ballet take the stage November 27–29 at Stillwater Area High School, from our youngest dancers to the seniors taking their final bows.

Some of the most important work in a Division II & III class happens on the floor, on an exercise ball.

Progressing Ballet Technique is a conditioning method that teaches the body what correct alignment feels like. Core, turnout, the small muscles of the foot. It is built into our Division II and III classes every week, not offered as an extra, and our faculty who teach it are certified.

The unglamorous work gives dancing its meaning.

The party scene is two fathers short.

The Stillwater Nutcracker begins with a Christmas Eve party scene, and the grown-ups in that room matter as much as the children. We are looking for two more volunteers to play dads in the party scene this November.

No experience needed. If you have danced or spent time in theater, that is wonderful. If you have not, we will teach you everything you need ;)

What the role looks like:
✔️ Rehearsing with the party scene cast this fall
✔️ Being present for theater week and dress rehearsal
✔️ Performing November 27–29 at Stillwater Area High School

The right person is dependable, comfortable around kids and families, and willing to jump in.

The first Nutcracker rehearsal always begins the same way. A room full of dancers who have not shared a stage since the spring ballet, and a quiet that settles the moment the music starts.

This is the thirty-fifth year. Ten weeks from today, dancers from age five up will take the stage at Stillwater Area High School, November 27, 28 and 29.

Every dancer who joins us in Levels A and above begins the same way: a free placement class, with a teacher watching quietly from the front of the room.

It tells us more than a form ever could. Where the strength is, where the habits are, what a dancer is ready for. Then we place them where they will grow, which is not always where their age would suggest. Pre-Ballet dancers, ages four and five, can simply enroll.

It is a small thing. It is also the beginning of everything else.

The studio was full this weekend. Nutcracker auditions are behind us, and the first rehearsal is Saturday.

Ten weeks from now, these dancers step onto the Stillwater Area High School stage in our 35th season. Between here and there: rehearsal after rehearsal, and the particular thrill of watching a cast come together.
