Preparing the studio for my annual Open Studio and Painting Sale! My studio is just north of Stillwater Minnesota. Had some nice pre-sales this week! If you see something you like or would like to come see my studio and work in person I’ll be open October 23 -25, 2026.

“Song of Summer” 16x20 is a painting I did as I worked up ideas and concepts for a larger version of this pond. Playing with the paint and moving ideas around the canvas gave me freedom to see what might happen and paint without fear. Here is the result. A special place, a beautiful pond, sweet memories painting with friends.

Announcing my 4-Day Workshop: “The Shape of Water: Painting the Illusion of Water with Oil Paints” at the Booth Academy in Cartersville GA. This four day studio workshop will focus on painting, realistic water with deep reflections. Learn my approach to creating beautiful water and the role light plays in the scene, as I share my techniques used in Painting water by employing shapes of color. You will learn my approach to building a painting, beginning with graphing the image from both a planner study and a photo reference, then building with a wash, followed by building up with thicker paint. Each morning will begin with a lecture and a painting demonstration, progressively moving the painting each morning, building on each concept. To learn more about this please visit boothmuseum.org.

“Beaver Hut Island” 24x24 is my latest piece from the studio. I’ve had a lovely and quiet summer staying put in and around my studio at home in Minnesota. The past few years have been exciting and full of travel but my artist soul needed to stay out, recharge, and allow home abd familiar quiet places inspire my paintings and nourish me. Although I’ve done some posting of a few of my Plein Air studies I’ve kept pretty quiet and private about my larger more conceptual studio pieces. I like that for me sometimes to just be in the process without interrupting my flow and see what happens. The collection of larger pieces are now done and I’ll start sharing them in weeks to come. This is one of them and we landed in a place where I can say, this is exactly how I feel about this place. 💕 this is the pond of my childhood. This island is on the pond and the form in the cattails in front of the island is a beaver hut. If you’ve ever seen a beaver hut, you would know they’re quite large and this can give scale to the size of these trees in this island. The Beaver work busy morning and evenings, cutting trees, cutting branches and swimming them through the lily pads. The path they carved out in the water between the Lily pads shows their rhythm. I’m pleased to share with you this piece which I hold close to my heart.

My my painting bag was packed last night and in the car so that I could get right out there this morning! My plan was to head a couple miles down the road to my aunts place where she and her husband have the most magnificent pumpkin patch! I was going to paint in the patch but was stopped at her fairytale-like garden. “Zinnias” 14x11. Don’t you just love when days go like this?! 🥰

“North Shore Moment” 9x12. This was one of my pieces I painted last week during the Grand Marais Plein air event. For those who aren’t familiar with how these events work, it goes like this. I was one of 60 competing artist (with an additional 77 in open class) also called featured artist. We had the week to Paint from life paintings of the North Shore, AKA Plein air. The parameters were Cook County. By Thursday at 7 PM, we had to have all of our paintings done and submitted and Friday the show opened and was hung and judged. Then we had an opening art reception with the public. We were required to have four completed pieces framed and hung on the walls. And if we did more than 4 pieces that we liked, we could have them on what’s called reserve in the back. It was tough to decide which 4 out if the 5 j really liked which to hang. I decided to put this one on reserve because it was similar to another scene I had done larger that same day and thought I’d hang the larger piece. So here’s a “North Shore Moment”.

“Superior Rockscape” 9x12. This piece is for sure my favorite piece I painted during Grand Marais Plein air. What a fun challenge to stay focused and not overwhelmed by the complexities of this scene. I kept reminding myself that these are just shapes and colors. Lighter/darker - cooler/warner. I got this.
