I have some exciting news to share! If you’ve followed me for a while now you know how much I love the marsh and this little old farm I bought back in 2014. When I bought it, it came with 16 acres and I saw the potential where many others couldn’t. I had vision for restoring the buildings for our home and my studio and the land to help restore to native. In November I married my husband Pete and together we’ve been working on adding the north end of the marsh along with 25 acres agricultural fields to the property to continue to reclaim as native prairie restoration fields. There were several people wanting to buy the land to build back there and I just couldn’t imagine doing that to this beautiful bird sanctuary. So, we decided to become stewards of this land and protect and nurture it! This is truly a dream of mine coming true and I can’t wait to share this process with you as we begin by removing invasive species and two old dumps of garbage dating back to 1900. The vision is to share this with painters to enjoy and paint!

“Desert Poppies” 18x24 oil on linen panel is one of the studio pieces I’ve been working on this summer. Inspired by a Plein air study I painted in Arizona late winter. I knew I wanted to do this one larger! I was I love with the movement and rhythm of the flowers and how they connect to and through the land.

“Where Summer Glows” 12x16 oil on linen painted at Dads. This evening had a special light, it was truly awe inspiring. I feverishly grabbed the color as the sun drop in an arch down towards the west and north. I find it interesting how from day to day throughout the summer the arc of the days dropping sun moves across and down the sky. What a joy.

I think August just might be my favorite month to paint! Here’s why, NO bugs, beautiful light, warmer greens, cooler nights, warm days and it just seems quieter. There’s just a titch of fall in the air and life seems to slow down a bit… I thought I’d share with you what it looks like when I go out to paint the pond where we grew up playing as children. Very quiet and peaceful and still untouched. The light went quickly but I grabbed the color I wanted without over working it. I’ll come back again tonight to do a couple more evening studies!

Such a lovely August evening down painting the river with my friend Mary! The light was a soft defused pinkish light which enveloped the entire scene and atmosphere. Very satisfying!

“August Evening at the Boom Site” 8x10 painted 8/17/2026. I’m interested right now in the study of the subtle change as we move through August. What do I mean you might be thinking? I’m referring to the shift in colors in the greens and slight shortening of the days and what happens to the atmosphere and light in color during this transition. I intend to be out painting daily for a while now to document this transition from day to day and I plan to paint the St Croix and the marsh at similar times of day to do this. “St Croix River Boom Site” 16x20 oil on linen panel is my latest painting painted in my studio using my smaller Plein air painting as my inspiration and information for this larger piece. For over 30 years now I found the St Croix River to be one of my greatest sources of inspiration for my paintings. I grew up on the river and started painting the river when I was 18 years old. When my kids were little and I had short windows of time I would run down to the boom site and I would do 60 minute paintings and study the light in the ever-changing qualities of the river. It’s one of those things that the more you know the more you know you don’t know and it just keeps you coming back for more. I’ve really grown to love the river in the constant of change that happens at every moment. A special place for me and so many other others.
