We say “celebrate our differences” like we all know what that means. But most of the time it translates to: “I celebrate your differences… as long as they don’t make me uncomfortable.”

Which feels like a slightly edited version of the idea.

So I’ve been thinking about that. What it actually looks like to not just tolerate differences, but see them as something intentional.

Human beings are apparently very committed to turning other human beings into filing cabinets.

One label. One folder. One confident little conclusion.

Meanwhile the actual person is standing there being infinitely more complicated than that.

So I dug into why labels feel useful at first, but often end up creating distance instead of understanding.

Turns out Compassion gets a lot harder when we stop seeing people as people.

We see another person and immediately go: “Excellent. Into a container you go.”

Very efficient. Mildly dystopian.

So I talked through why labels feel useful at first, but often end up creating emotional distance instead of connection.

Because the simpler the label gets, the easier it becomes to stop seeing the actual person underneath it.

But it got me thinking about change. About how our bodies are constantly remaking themselves while we spend so much energy resisting transformation.

We believe Jesus defeated death, offers Grace and forgiveness, and invited us into eternal life.
And sometimes we look absolutely miserable about it.
Which seems weird.
These slides are a little reminder that following Christ doesn’t require a permanent spiritual frown. Reverence matters. So does Joy.
