Incidental Meditations
October 10 - November 21, 2026

Red Arrow is pleased to announce Incidental Meditations, a solo exhibition of six new paintings by Tennessee-based artist Dax van Aalten, opening Saturday, October 10, with a reception from 5–8 PM. The exhibition will remain on view through November 21, 2026.

Dax van Aalten begins his paintings through quick accumulations of marks, colors, shapes, interruptions, and revisions. One decision leads to another, and images emerge through the process rather than being established beforehand. As he describes it, he is less interested in illustrating an idea than in discovering one through the act of painting. In the new works, forms suggest leaves, water, flowers, weather, terrain, and growth, but never resolve into specific places. Instead, Van Aalten moves continually between abstraction and recognition. A landscape seems to appear and then recede; depth gives way to surface; something familiar becomes uncertain again.

“This piece gathers four equidistant points from the color wheel, and takes each one through an analogous transformation as it rolls across the field. While the tetrad remains stable, the color harmonies shift, like chord progressions in music. “My paintings are diagrammatic color games, a study of evolving systems at the intersection of order and disintegration. Drawing from geometries of color, the paintings begin with fastidiously mapped grids. The cells are then populated with systems of incremental color mixtures, infusing abstraction with the poetics of language, physics, and cosmology. Each band flows through a journey of transformation across the field, and pattern enables the painting to be deciphered despite the phenomenologically uncertain nature of color theory.” -Brianna Bass

This presentation marks Red Arrow’s first participation in the fair. Featuring works that immerse viewers in a dynamic exploration of color, perception, and systems of meaning, the presentation introduces a compelling body of work that expands contemporary conversations around the evolving relationship between pattern, color, and visual experience.
