Another Elm collected from Starwood Amphitheater grounds this time last year, plopped a little deep into a great John Cole pot ( ).

Growing in cultivated soil with constant exposure and deer pruning for 15+ years led to great canopy formation to support an excellent shallow root system.

Stoked to grow this one out a bit to bring some extra girth and taper to the bottom branches. 💪

I got a very special invite to a very special place to dig today, and I’m currently overflowing with gratitude and nostalgia.

Starwood Amphitheater was a Middle TN outdoor concert venue staple for 20 years until it was closed permanently in 2006. After the sale fell through it has sat and deteriorated, destined to eventually be bulldozed.

More tree pictures as I get them potted.

(This is very much so private property and we were out there with explicit permission. Do not attempt to go, you will be trespassing.)

Nick Lenz grown/developed/motorcycle crashed Black Hills Spruce landed today.

Previous owner was no longer able to care for it properly, which left it congested with old needles and twiggy die back up top, thus the weak (but mostly salvageable) branches down low.

I’ve thoroughly cleaned it out and thinned the very top a wee bit, likely more a little later on. Now we wait!

Pot appreciation time.

A monster in my Yoshiyuki kawada collection, albeit relatively small, this one may actually get a tree soon. 😈

Come see my entire collection on display at Cheekwood for the Nashville Bonsai Society show July 16th and 17th.

Beaver’d Hophornbeam - Collected ‘21

The beavers did a particularly excellent job on this trunk, forming a near-perfect taper with great movement.

Having such a well-developed trunk, all’s left for me to do is keep it happy and sort out the branching.

Twin Trunk American Hornbeam - Collected ‘21

The paired movement of the trunks on this one really does it for me. 😻

It’s starting to show some structure with diligent selective and directional pruning alongside heavy feeding.

Spiraea japonica “Little Princess”

This little one is jamming out after 2 years of development. 3 rounds of light shearing this year so far to help balance energy, detailed trim coming whenever this heat subsides a little. 🥵

Winged Elm #1 ☝️

While not everyone’s cup of tea, this tree has tons of depth and character in person despite its “flaws”.

Looking pretty good after a light cut back post repotting, but there’s still a long road ahead to establish the roots, back branches and multiple crowns.

Creeper Alert!

This Virginia Creeper is settling into its “new” Jim Barrett container quite well.

I will remain focused on keeping the interior growth happy and vigorous for the rest of the season to gear up for a restyle this Fall to better suit the new pot.
