The Legend of the Hollowshriek

They say when the clouds sink low enough to swallow the mountain peaks, something moves inside them.

The old families called it the Hollowshriek.

It was said to be enormous, with slate-gray scales, a crown of jagged horns, and wings so broad they disappeared into the storm. Its hide looked ancient and battered, its wings torn through with holes, yet somehow it never seemed to weaken. One burning amber eye was sometimes all a person saw before the clouds closed around it again.

But its name came from its cry.

Not a roar.

A long, hollow scream that rolled through the valleys and seemed to come from every direction at once.

According to legend, the Hollowshriek rarely descended from the mountains during clear weather. It came with violent storms, circling beneath thunderheads while livestock scattered and birds vanished from the sky.

People once believed it caused the storms.

The oldest stories say otherwise.

The Hollowshriek was running from them.

Something lived beyond the highest ridges, something the creature feared enough to abandon its mountain territory whenever the sky turned black.

That is why the elders had one peculiar warning:

If thunder shakes the windows, stay inside.

If you hear the Hollowshriek, extinguish the lamps.

But if you ever see the Hollowshriek flying toward your home...

Don't waste time watching it.

Because whatever made a monster that size flee...

is already coming over the mountain.
