I’ve got enough of my thoughts together now that I can make this post. This post discusses mental health. Skip to the end for helpful resources regardibg building a safe community and resources regardibg mental health.
I will not pretend to know the intimate details of what happened to Squidkid1111 ( Ash ), but I beleive they passed away in no small part due to racist bullying from ignorant and cruel people whose own imaginations will never surpass that of an emotionally stunted parasite that lacks its own joy and must siphon it from the skilled creativity of those like Ash.
While inclusivity is a balm for the wound, we must do our part to not allow their reckless and often intentional toxicity, to further infect the spaces we create so that people like Ash can truly be safe and get the support they need.
When you see something, do not ignore it. When you hear something, take appropriate and safe action. Bring it to the attention of those with the power to take action if you aren’t able to. If you ARE the someone with power, do the responsible thing. Treat the wound at the source and do not mask the symptoms.
Be tough on those who exhibit natures that are antithetical to the very meaning of inclusitivity and safe spaces. Otherwise they will thrive under your negligence and spread.
If YOU are being targeted by racist comments, and any of the usual vitriol (fatphobia , homophobia, ableism, transphobia, etc.) YOU DO NOT DESERVE IT. The world is better with you in it, even if you don’t feel it in the moment, even if your brain betrays you and agrees, the brain can lie. The brain can attack itself, just like any other organ can fail its function or bevonr ill and harm the body. It’s not your fault, you just need help. You need support. You need time. You need patience. Sometimes you need medicine. Sometimes you have unmet needs and require other resources. It’s ok to feel. You don’t need to suck it up.
Sucking it up implies shouldering the burden in silence. You do not need to handle it that way if you can’t, because you don’t have to and you shouldn’t have to.
Ash, I am so truly sorry that you were subjected to some of the worst of us. May you rest in peace and creativity. My heart goes out to your family and loved ones who are calling for “mature conversations that build connection, understanding, and inclusivity.” in your honor.
