Business Owners, especially BoB:
You have the vision, soul, and talent. Your overall goal is to increase your bottom line and sustain your business’s organization identity. This is good, but not great—yet! For your annual strategic planning next year, ask yourself:
“What could we LEARN in order to DECREASE BARRIERS to making the sale?”
This question hinges on two things that support thriving in your market: 1) learning... continual learning suggests that you are willing to know more than you do currently and 2) decrease barriers... successful companies solve the “why” and the “how” for customers, first! If we are to be premier and not easily duplicated, it has to be more than just the “secret recipe,” we have to know exactly what makes us gain or lose business.
For instance, in light of the pandemic I notice a lot of unique business strategies organizations are employing to attract and keep customers. As I track one particular successful small business adjusting to the social distancing protocols, I asked how management would handle masks? The gentlemen mentioned they are considering providing masks for their customers; on which I immediately I commented how great of an investment that could be if they buy “in bulk” for their customers: the sale for any one of their products would overwhelmingly cover the cost of a disposable mask, and thus decrease a barrier to sale. Some potential customers may turn around and will change their mind about entering your store if they forgot their mask...
These types of convenience-making decisions on behalf of the customer speak to one’s ability to strategize what will be easiest and most appealing to potential clientele in light of barriers. Barriers exist in all organizations; this should be the direction of your strategic goals, especially as you anticipate what your current and potential customers’ needs are.
