2023 isn’t just the year of Barbie— it’s the year of Brandi. Out is honored to have Brandi Carlile as our Out100 cover star! ✨ 👏🏽 🌈 💕

This year, the le***an music star took home two Grammy Awards and went on two tours — her own, and she joined Pink on her Summer Carnival Tour. Carlile performed at many music festivals (including her own: Brandi Carlile’s Girls Just Wanna Weekend) and covered The Indigo Girls LGBTQ+ anthem ‘Closer to Fine’ for a little summer flick called ‘Barbie.’ Like the scene in the where Barbie and Ken travel to the real world and sing ‘Closer to Fine,’ Carlile’s timeless voice provides hope and healing in hard times.

In our cover story, talks about her career, family, aging, and her role as a prominent LGBTQ+ figure in and beyond. The also tells Out contributor Tracy E. Gilchrist that she loved ‘Barbie’ and director but admits she had her concerns when she first heard about it, “I was concerned about how a movie called Barbie was going to integrate ‘Closer to Fine’ in a respectful way,” she said.
