While going through my images from 2025 I noticed a common thread; hope. Despite the drastically different subjects, hope can take so many forms that it appears in each of these frames.

Seeing these images side by side reminded me that hope and human connection can be one and the same. And just like hope, the connections we create are a cornerstone in the foundation of promise.

When we build connections, we build hope.
When we build hope, we build connections.

Our roles in this world may all look different but they are all equally vital. So however you show up for yourself and for others, just do it well.

It’ll be enough, I promise.

The Department of Homeland Security’s latest immigration enforcement operation “Catahoula Crunch” began in the beginning of December in New Orleans. For the first few weeks, Customs and Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino seemingly acted as the face of the operation. The result was a jarring confluence of CBP’s Public Relations alongside their attempts at reaching the operation’s stated goal of 5,000 arrests. Commander Bovino could routinely be seen leading his heavily armed team and convoy through neighborhoods adorned with holiday lights while also making time to participate in interviews, photo ops, and to wave to people in the streets. But throughout the day, other teams of federal agents would conduct their own traffic stops and immigration enforcement without Commander Bovino, with some interactions resulting in more physically violent arrests.

A convoy of at least ten vehicles filled with federal agents and led by Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino tore through Chicago for hours on Saturday. They used chemical agents, kidnapped multiple people, and targeted mostly the Little Village and Cicero neighborhoods.

The convoy stopped at one point in Cicero and found themselves facing dozens of residents that had come out to deter further kidnappings. With guns drawn they arrested at least 3 people before the convoy slowly made its way back to the main road and continued their operations.

You Got Gold, the annual celebration of the life and music of and fundraiser for , has been my favorite weekend of the year for the last four years.

I can say with great ease that one of the best parts is getting to hang with the house band. Jason Wilber, Dave Jacques, Jen Gunderman, Fats Kaplin, Bryan Owings, and Kenneth Blevins. They are the best of the best.

Talented and funny as hell. Three days spent listening to stories, laughing, and playing John Prine tunes. I feel so fortunate when I look through these images, the band has always welcomed me into their world.

An emergency class action lawsuit was filed a few days ago on behalf of people detained and held by ICE at the Broadview Processing Facility. ICE has been using Broadview as a detention center and holding people there for numerous days, sometimes weeks, despite the facility’s intended purpose of only holding people for a matter of hours.

Allegations in the lawsuit include insufficient food/water, no showers, overcrowding, no access to medical supplies or medications, racial slurs being used, and attorney’s not being able to contact clients. The lawsuit is 76 pages long.

Broadview has steadily been the center of protests before and throughout “Operation Midway Blitz”. So much so that barricades have been set up outside the facility and authorities have attempted to enforce “Protest Hours”, saying that people are only allowed to protest/be present at the facility within certain hours of the day.

On the morning of October 24th, ICE agents kidnapped a man outside of the Erie Neighborhood House after he dropped off his pregnant wife for her doctor’s appointment. (See my previous post) Later that afternoon when it was time for children to be picked up from Erie House’s day care, at least 85 community members had arrived to protect the kids and their families.

The majority of people stood at the ends of the block in front of the Center. The Alderman had approved Erie House using saw horse barricades at the intersection. As neighbors were discussing what they were allowed to do if ICE arrived, one of them said “We can’t stop them…but we can slow them down. Give Erie House enough time to get people inside.” Folks took turns walking families to their cars or to their homes nearby. Some kept watch on the alley behind the building while others patrolled on bicycles or in cars. But no matter the person’s role, everyone had a whistle.

The whistle has become the widely used way of alerting those nearby to the presence of ICE or other federal agents and most Chicagoans now carry one. If someone sees ICE activity, they loudly and endlessly blow their whistle. Those that need or want to run towards the scene are signaled quickly while those that need or want to go the opposite direction are given the chance to do so.

While we stood near Erie House, a group chat was started amongst those that had shown up. “So student drop-off is at 8am I think and pickup is 2:30. We’ll need to coordinate to make sure people are here for both.” Other neighbors nodded in agreement and chimed in with their availabilities.

Thankfully, everyone left Erie House safely that day. This is only one story of the community coming together to protect their neighbors, but it’s happening all over Chicago. People know that the threat of arrest or physical harm from ICE agents is very real but despite that, the streets are still saturated with whistles and those that are willing to run towards that sound in hopes of saving someone.

Oct. 24th, 2025 - Chicago, IL

When we arrived at Erie Neighborhood House in West Town, employees were tapping up a car window that had been busted.

Minutes before, a group of masked ICE agents had surrounded the vehicle, smashed the window, and kidnapped the driver. The driver was a soon-to-be-father that had just dropped his pregnant wife off for her doctor’s appointment at the clinic. She watched helplessly from inside the lobby of Erie House while he was taken.

Community members gathered outside Erie House after the abduction discussing how best to protect the people coming to the center as well as the children that would be leaving Erie’s Day Care later that afternoon. More on that story to follow.
——
Erie Neighborhood House was founded in 1870 with the specific intention of serving the area’s immigrant population. For the last 155 years, Erie House has done just that. They are the oldest operating Settlement House in Chicago and are a cornerstone of the community, providing assistance through countless programs. The Erie Family Health Center began within Erie House in 1957 when a need for medical care in West Town was recognized. What started as one doctor seeing patients at Erie House has grown to providing health care for more than 87,000 patients a year across 13 health centers in the city.

“Born a photographer, raised as a musician.”

There is nothing pretty about rock ‘n’ roll but that doesn’t mean there’s a lack of beauty. My music based Fine Art photography focuses on the subtle and intimate moments between musicians and their audience. Moments that go unnoticed by some and are cherished by others. Thank you for your support and while you’re at it, I encourage you to find some live music soon. -See you at the show-
