Nick Cave has become a voice for many us border-walking artists who find ourselves on the high wire between sacred and secular, certainty and surrender, even grief and transcendence. โฃ
โฃ
The first time I read his book I found resonance in his language and the poetic articulation of things I had traversed in my own journey through travail and the creative distillation of traumatic events. โฃ
โฃ
Confession here, but Nick Cave is in the top three of dream conversations Iโ€™d love to have to the podcast. So, if youโ€™re reading this Nick, hit me up. Weโ€™d have a great time. If not, thanks for inspiring a generation with your raw and redemptive artistry. โฃ

Meister Eckhart was a Medieval German theologian, preacher, and mystic who lived around the turn of the 14th century. โฃ
โฃ
He taught that the deepest encounters with God happen not by striving, but by becoming empty enough to receive what is already present. โฃ
โฃ
His ideas were so evocative and enigmatic that he was investigated by the Inquisition, and after his death, condemned by some as heretical. โฃ
โฃ
Even so, those who condemned him have been lost to history, while, here we are today, still talking about him, learning from him and quoting him. Sometimes only time will truly tell.
โฃ
Sometimes, the art we make is not for today but for a generation yet to come. โฃ
โฃ
We have to be willing to be misunderstood to go where we are called to go and to make what our hearts ask of us to make.

Annie Dillard has been called a โ€œbackyard mystic.โ€ I could think of no better description for this incredible poet and writer whose work has inspired me and journeyed alongside of me for years. Annieโ€™s writing has a way of highlighting the miraculous in the mundane and reminding us that every common thing hides a beautiful mystery into something greater. She taught a generation to see through the natural into the numinous, ever inviting us to see the world with new eyes. Grateful for her light and life. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

Abraham Joshua Heschel (1907โ€“1972) was a Polish-born American Jewish theologian, philosopher, and rabbi whose writings explored wonder, prayer, spirituality, and the human encounter with God. Born into a Hasidic family in Warsaw, Heschel studied in Germany before fleeing N**i persecution and eventually settling in the United States. He taught at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York and became one of the most influential Jewish thinkers of the twentieth century. โฃ
โฃ
Heschel emphasized the importance of awe and radical amazement, arguing that the world is charged with divine significance when we learn to perceive it with attentive hearts. He was also deeply engaged in the civil rights movement and became a close colleague of Martin Luther King Jr.โฃ

This week on Makers and Mystics Podcast we are talking with artist Jake Weidmann | Artist & Master Penman about โ€œthe art of slow,โ€ a deliberate, counter-cultural devotion in a culture driven by speed and disposability. โฃ
โฃ
In our conversation, Jake shares the inner workings of his creative process through the lens of his latest book,

Dorothy L. Sayers (1893โ€“1957) was an English novelist, poet, playwright, and Christian thinker. She was the second historical figure whose life, I teased out in one of our artist profile episodes. โฃ
โฃ
Dorothy is a renegade, a pioneer, and the most beautiful kind of troublemaker and rabble-rouser in the art and faith world. โฃ
โฃ
Alongside of Evelyn Underhill, who was the first woman to lecture on spirituality at Oxford, Dorothy was one of the first women to receive a degree from the prestigious school. โฃ
โฃ
She was a friend and friendly rival to C.S. Lewis who would take him to the mat on various theological and creative discussions. โฃ
โฃ
Dorothy Sayers was offered a prestigious Doctorate of Divinity from the Archbishop of Canterbury but politely turned it down. โฃ
โฃ
She said that she wanted to remain an โ€œoutsiderโ€ and would better serve the Christian faith as a novelist. She didnโ€™t view herself as a theologian. โฃ
โฃ
Even so, her book, ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜”๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜ฌ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ, is a must read for anyone seeking to reconcile how art serves as a doorway into deeper theological frameworks of understanding. I highly recommend this brilliant ladyโ€™s work to everyone. โฃ

Rainer Maria Rilke (1875โ€“1926) was an Austrian poet and writer whose work explored solitude, beauty, suffering, love, death, and the mystery of existence.โฃ
โฃ
He possessed a restless passion for God, often expressed through a Christian lens, although his spiritual framework was more mystical and expansive than doctrinal. He sought God through beauty, suffering, nature, art, and attentive encounters with ordinary things.โฃ
โฃ
For Rilke, the artistโ€™s task was to learn how to see and to remain open to the mystery hidden within the visible world.โฃ
โฃ
His Book of Hours and Letters to a Young Poet remain two of the most influential works on my creative life.

The 13th century Persian poet Hafiz is one of my biggest spiritual and artistic inspirations. โฃ
โฃ
His poetry encompasses everything from faith to music, love and wine, religious ecstasy, the Beloved, and exposing hypocrisy. He will make you cry laughing, or make you fall in love all over again. โฃ
โฃ
I was in Paris several years ago at the famous Shakespeareโ€™s bookstore and snapped this photo of his poetry leading me up the staircase. โฃ
