Thank you to everyone who joined us Monday night for the developmental reading of STRONG INSIDE! Knowing the script will change dramatically as it develops over the coming months, your input was invaluable! Thanks also to David Chattam and Aleta Myles for reading the script, Cal Fuller for hosting our talkback, Brian Russell for serving during our reception, Gay Campbell and the First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt for hosting us, Andrew Maraniss for allowing us to adapt his book, Perry Wallace for approving the script, and last but certainly not least, Perry's extended family and friends -- including sister Jessie Wallace Jackson and nephew James -- who traveled to Nashville for the reading. This is just the first step down the path of bringing Perry's incredible journey to the stage -- THANK YOU for being a part of the process!!

Thank you to Mike Organ and The Tennessean for sharing our upcoming developmental staged reading with their readers in Sunday's paper. David Chattam will portray Perry Wallace and about 20 other characters who impacted Perry's journey in this adaptation of Andrew Maraniss' book STRONG INSIDE. A reception at 6:30 precedes the reading at 7pm at the Siegenthaler First Amendment Center. Admission is free. Please join us.

The play was inspired by Andrew Maraniss’ bestselling book.

CONGRATULATIONS to Kenley Smith on his selection as one of only 5 mainstage playwrights chosen for the upcoming 2015 Great Plains Theatre Conference where he will present his newest play AKUMA SHIN!! Kenley's support of Playhouse Nashville has been unparalleled -- from the Ten Minute Playhouse as a writer of favorites including THIS IS TOKYO, GODWIN'S LAW, and MEN OF EXTREMITY, as well as acting and directing; to the smash success of his riveting DEVIL SEDAN in 2013; to his work behind the scenes contributing in more ways than one to the development of plays and Playhouse Nashville. Well done, Kenley -- we're proud to have worked with you the past few years, and know that Nashville is lucky to have artists like you showing why this is a wonderful place for new plays!

“The GPTC is rapidly becoming one of the most important clearninghouses, and way-stations for serious theatre-makers from all over the country. The folks in Omaha are on to something very important, and the dialogue engendered there is of the highest order!”

Sincere thanks to Martin A. Brady & the Nashville Scene for covering not only SCARECROWS WILL NEVER SEE THE SUNSET, but the work Playhouse Nashville & others are doing to continue elevating the voices of local artists. Much appreciated! The growth of original theatre in Nashville is a team effort -- not only on-stage, but also amidst the interconnected local ecosystem of companies, media outlets (like the Scene & the Tennessean, and others), patrons, business sponsors, and generous donors. Live theatre simply cannot exist in a vacuum -- it requires eyes and ears to engage with the artists who have created the piece. We all play our roles in determining Nashville's theatrical future -- from the writers who spend time watching and writing about productions, to patrons who support through their attendance on full-price, comp, or pay-what-you-can tickets, to those who have the financial security to be donors. However, the advancement of our craft falls primarily on the shoulders of all local actors, writers, directors, producers, and other live theatre artists who should be the loudest champions of deserving work (as well as constructive critics of areas needing improvement) & the outstanding craftsmanship being created right here in our yard -- regardless of whose banner the work is produced under. Otherwise we're expecting from others (critics, writers, and patrons) more than what we are expecting of ourselves -- that in our absence they will provide the eyes and ears necessary to engage with the newly created art. We are all responsible for whether Nashville's theatre reputation evolves or devolves moving forward. Which way do you want to go?

Nashville may not have a theatrical version of Music Row, where playwrights would score regular "cuts" of their work and make decent coin via royalties....

Remember when Batman and Superman met for a cup of coffee? What about that time a mother & daughter brought up their issues while styling the hair of their deceased mom/grandmother? Or when an old man in the park thought he had just minutes to live? Or when a father dealt with his imaginary daughter growing from infancy to adulthood in the span of 10 minutes? Or when you saw the poetic tale of two lovers in crisis? Or that time a single golf putt -- just one putt -- carried with it the hopes and dreams of everyone watching? Plays by Bob Giordano, Rebekah Durham, Emily Pitts Donohoe, Darren Michael, Sara Gaddis, & Nate Eppler are on the Thursday slate of Playwrights in the Round. Grab your tickets before 4pm today!!
