I'm honored to be teaching a class "Creating Worlds: Extended Collage" @buchanan_arts_nashville January 24 - March 18

I love creating physical spaces that act as 'time traveling vehicles' by layering ideas, time periods, and concepts.
Heavily inspired by the "Boom for Real" technique of Basquiat, the Cut-Up method of William Burroughs, and all of my loved "vinyl sampling" 90's DJ/Producers (Prince Paul, Pete Rock, Rza, Q-tip, etc.) I'll be taking local Nashville & American history and fusing those lectures to create lush landscapes. This will be informative & fun.

Memories of Matriarchs.
This winter season they'd be tellin' us...

*Go get 2 garlics
*Get all the cloves & peel em'
*Get a mason jar, fill it 3/4 wit' Tennessee honey
*Put all that garlic in there
*Grate a lil' ginger in there
*Open it every other day, stir & shake for 3 weeks
Now that honey will loosen up and it'll take all that stingy hot bite out that garlic. The garlic will turn sweet n' that ginger will settle ya stomach. A teaspoon every night before bed.
That should have ya ready for February.

I cannot begin to talk about my love for #GeorgeWashingtonCarver and his huge contributions to the world!!!

He single-handedly saved the South from soil erosion due to the excessive cotton growing. Introducing crop rotation, permaculture, and nitrogen-rich plants such as #peanuts and sweet potatoes, he was able to rebuild the soil structure naturally without synthetic fertilizers.

A new problem arose amongst the farmers with acres and acres of these new soil rebuilding plants...what do you do with the produce/harvest?

Dr. Carver began making a series of pamphlets to circulate around the rural area which introduced THOUSANDS of different ways of making value-added products from paint, fuel, ice cream, and to.....yes peanut butter. "Help For the Hard Times (1910)" is one if my favorite pamphlets along with "101 Ways to Use a Tomato". I could go on & on about him but be sure to study our plant-whisperer ancestor Dr. Carver and take his spirit into your gardens this Spring.

Tennessee Century Farms was started in 1975. The primary focus of the program is to continue honoring and recognizing the dedication and contributions of families who have owned and farmed the same land for at least 100 years.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.__Oscar Wilde

Known as the 'Original Nashville Students', they were a African-American group that were not students nor from Nashville, but they formed in Chicago in 1882. By 1883, the group took on a new name: the Nashville Students, and later added “Original.” There was a dual purpose to this name change: there was an over-saturation of groups with “Tennessee” in their name, and “Original” was meant to distinguish themselves. Perhaps more importantly, “Nashville Students” elicits connections with the popular world-re-known Fisk Jubilee Singers of Fisk University, the originators of jubilee singing.

A frustrated James Weldon Johnson said...

“practically every Negro vote is labeled, sealed, delivered and packed away long before election.” “How can the Negro expect any worthwhile consideration for his vote as long as politicians are always reasonably sure as how it will be cast?”

Planning Design Session Seeks Community Input for the Jefferson Street Corridor

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (July 7, 2016) – Residents, business owners, and community members near the Jefferson Street corridor are encouraged to come out and join planning experts to consider how the Jefferson Street area near I-40 might grow and change during a two-day community visioning session as a part the US Department of Transportation’s Every Place Counts Design Challenge.

Nashville is one of four cities selected for the Challenge, and the conversation here will center on potential changes to neighborhoods and the commercial district disrupted by the construction of Interstate 40 in the 1960s. This is the first of four design sessions that will take place in Spokane, WA, Philadelphia, PA and Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN – three other winning cities.

“This is an exciting opportunity to rally the residents and business owners along Jefferson Street together to help shape this critical corridor’s future,” said Mayor Megan Barry. “Thanks to the generous support of the US Department of Transportation, and in keeping with Nashville’s recent designation as a HUD Promise Zone, we will be able to get the resources and attention needed to better connect the North Nashville community in a way that honors its history and ensures a vibrant and successful future.”

WHO: Residents, business owners, and community members to be joined by national planning experts.

WHAT: Community Visioning Forum

WHEN: Monday, July 11 from 6:00PM to 8:00PM; Tuesday, July 12 at 3:30PM

WHERE: Cal Turner Center at Meharry Medical College, 1011 21st Avenue North

About the Every Place Counts Design Challenge

The Every Place Counts Design Challenge aims to raise awareness and identify inclusive community design solutions that bridge the infrastructure divide and reconnect people to opportunity. Each of the four winning cities will receive a design session that convenes elected officials, urban planners, designers, and a cross-section of local residents around a transportation project that has the potential to link communities to essential services such as jobs, healthcare, and schools.

The importance of North Nashville. A Quick Read.
Domestic Terrorism in our own backyards
1. Visit his home at "2012 Meharry Blvd." Thank Kwame Lillard for the Historical Marker.
2. He was very Instrumental along with other Black Attorneys helping in the Civil Rights Struggle & getting "protestors" which were mostly students out of jail.
3. Nashville's racist did not like this idea so they cowardly bombed his house while he was sleeping in bed with wife. They were untouched.
4. Luckily they bounced off the house, but its shattred much of the glass at Meharry Medical School across the street
5. Notice how he did not move, he stayed IN the community, BUT he installed "narrow windows" in the front of the house, so those molotov cocktails and dynamite sticks are not easily thrown in

A quote from the man himself about Nashville, but first a lil background:
1. 1st Black Executive Secretary for NAACP
2. US consul for President Roosevelt
3. Writer of Black spiritual anthem " Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" (you've probably 'had' to sing this at sometime in life)
4. Professor of Creative Literature & Writing at Fisk University
5. Lived in beautiful Dutch Colonial home at 911 Dr. D.B. Todd Blvd in North Nashville

"Fisk University can rightly claim that the Jubilee Singers made Nashville famous. They made the name of this city a familiar word in the mouths of millions of people in the United States; a hundreds of thousands of people in Europe who, otherwise, would not have know even that there ws such a state of Tennessee, learned through them that there was such a state and Nashville was it's capital.... But in my opinion, more far-reaching, more vitally important [of al things] presenting to the world the Spirituals."
James Weldon Johnson, Jubilee Day, October 6, 1933
