“Laid Back ‘n Low Key (Cay)” is Alan Jackson’s quiet escape on his 2008 album Good Time.

Jackson wrote the song himself. Arista Nashville released the album on March 4, 2008, and Keith Stegall produced it, reuniting with Jackson for the record. The song is track 12, runs about 2:51, and Eddie Bayers Jr. played drums on it.

The “Cay” in the title is a small island, which gives the song its sunny, relaxed feel. One reviewer described it as a piece of soft rock and a counterpart to the album’s lively duet “Never Loved Before.”

Alan Jackson recorded “The Blues Man” as a thank-you to the singers who shaped him.

Hank Williams Jr. wrote it and first put it on his 1980 album Habits Old and New. Jackson recorded his own version for Under the Influence, a 1999 album of songs by artists he admired. Others on that record came from George Jones, Johnny Paycheck, Merle Haggard and Don Williams.

Arista Nashville released “The Blues Man” as a single in January 2000, and it reached number 37 on the country chart.

There's something comforting about hearing Alan Jackson return to the roots of country music with "Blue Moon of Kentucky." Written and first recorded by Bill Monroe in 1946, the song found a beautiful new home on Alan's 2013 release *The Bluegrass Album*. I've always loved how his gentle Georgia drawl settles naturally into that old bluegrass sound, surrounded by the warmth of acoustic instruments. For those of us who grew up hearing Bill Monroe and Elvis Presley sing their own versions, Alan's recording feels like visiting an old friend. Some melodies carry a lifetime of memories, no matter who's singing them.

On “A Little Bluer Than That,” one of the song’s writers also sings behind Alan Jackson.

Mark Irwin and Irene Kelley wrote the song, and Kelley added background vocals on the recording. It is track two on Jackson’s album Drive, which Arista Nashville released on January 15, 2002, with Keith Stegall producing. The song runs 2:54, and Mark McClurg plays fiddle.

Most of the album is Jackson’s own writing, so this track is one of the few songs he took from other writers. It was not issued as a single.

Frederick Whitfield wrote “O How I Love Jesus” in 1855, and Alan Jackson recorded it for Precious Memories Volume II, released March 26, 2013. That’s 158 years between the hymn and his version. Jackson keeps it acoustic and plain, the way a church song sounds at a Sunday service. This was his second gospel collection, and a hymn that old doesn’t need much help to land. I’d play it on a quiet morning with the windows open 🙏

Alan Jackson sang “That’s the Way” to his wife, Denise, at their wedding in 1979.

Pat Terry wrote the song. For many years it stayed unreleased, until it appeared in 2016 on the Precious Memories Collection, which Jackson released through Walmart on October 28. The two-disc set gathers his hymn albums Precious Memories (2006) and Precious Memories Volume II (2013), plus two previously unreleased songs, this one and “It’s All About Him.”

“That’s the Way” runs 3:58. The two Precious Memories albums have sold 2.3 million copies combined.

Jim Reeves’s “I’d Like to Be” was the B-side of a number-one hit, and it still reached number 18 on the country chart on its own.

Hugh Ashley wrote the song. RCA Victor released it in 1958 on a single with “Billy Bayou,” written by Roger Miller, produced by Chet Atkins. “Billy Bayou” went to number one.

Both songs appear on the 1960 album He’ll Have to Go, a collection of Reeves’s earlier singles that includes two number-one hits, the title song and “Billy Bayou.” “I’d Like to Be” runs 2:00.

Some hymns have a way of taking you straight back to a little country church on Sunday morning. "Love Lifted Me," written by James Rowe and Howard E. Smith in 1912, found a beautiful home on Alan Jackson's 2013 album *Precious Memories Volume II*. I've always loved how Alan sings gospel without trying to dress it up. His gentle country voice lets the words speak for themselves, bringing back memories of wooden pews, old hymnbooks, and families singing together. More than a century after it was written, this song still carries the comforting feeling of hope when life gets difficult.

“For the Good Times” was supposed to be the B-side of Ray Price’s 1970 single.

Columbia sent the other side, “Grazin’ in Greener Pastures,” to country radio first. Price insisted that “For the Good Times” had greater hit potential, and after Wayne Newton recorded his own version, the label switched to promoting it.

Kris Kristofferson wrote the song in 1968, and Bill Nash recorded it first that year. Price recorded it on March 16, 1970, with an orchestra at Columbia Studio A in Nashville. Kristofferson’s own version appears on his debut album, released in June 1970.

Price’s single reached number one on the country chart and number 11 on the pop chart. At the 1971 Academy of Country Music Awards, it won Song of the Year for Kristofferson and Single of the Year for Price.

Some hymns can take you straight back to a little country church, no matter how many years have passed. Alan Jackson's recording of "I'll Fly Away," from his 2006 album *Precious Memories*, has always done that for me. Written by Albert E. Brumley in 1929, the song carries a joyful hope of leaving earthly troubles behind and finding peace in Heaven. I love how Alan keeps it simple, letting that familiar Georgia voice bring the old words to life. It reminds me of Sunday mornings when the whole congregation sang along, and even the oldest voices sounded full of joy.
