🌿 Farmstand Update! 🌸🦋

Fresh-cut flower bouquets and garden cups were harvested and arranged this morning and are now available at our self-serve farmstand! Each bouquet is unique, featuring seasonal flowers and herbs grown right here at The Garden at Pinehurst Farm.

While you’re here, don’t miss our Black Swallowtail caterpillar habitat!

Several of our caterpillars have now left the dill and attached themselves to branches, preparing to become chrysalises. If you look closely, you may even spot the tiny white silk “seatbelt”—called a silk girdle—that holds each caterpillar securely in place as it begins one of nature’s most incredible transformations.

It’s a real-life science lesson for kids and adults alike, and a wonderful opportunity to witness the life cycle of a butterfly up close.

🦋 Please enjoy with your eyes only. These caterpillars are in a very delicate stage of their transformation, so please do not touch, tap, or move the enclosure. Even small disturbances can interrupt this remarkable process.

Thank you for helping us protect these future Black Swallowtail butterflies.

🦋 Swallowtail Caterpillar Update!

Remember the six Black Swallowtail caterpillars that claimed our dill?

Well… they’re growing up!

Out of the six caterpillars, only one remains on the dill plant. The other five have wandered off in search of the perfect place to begin their next transformation. We found several climbing the sticks we placed in their enclosure, while others chose the sides and top of the screen habitat instead.

The next step is one of the most amazing parts of their journey—they’ll soon form their chrysalises, where they’ll transform into beautiful Black Swallowtail butterflies.

Now we’re waiting… and watching. 🐛➡️🦋

With a little luck, we may even witness a butterfly emerge during our Schuma’s Path Kickoff Weekend with Ember, July 9–13. There’s no guarantee—nature works on its own schedule—but what a beautiful symbol that would be as we celebrate new beginnings, conservation, and connecting people with nature.

If you’re stopping by the farmstand, take a peek at our butterfly habitat and see if you can spot where our little travelers have settled.

Please remember—eyes only. Thank you for helping us protect these future pollinators.

🌿 Harvesting fresh Pinehurst-grown catnip and watching the cats roll, purr, and happily nibble on it is an instant smile. 💚

Jefar and Cruella at the barn couldn’t get enough of today’s harvest! I even brought some home for our house cat, Brady. I think he looks like a prince wearing his little catnip crown. 👑🐈

The gardens were looking especially beautiful today after the much-needed rain. Everything seems a little greener, fresher, and happier.

Our rain gauge at home measured about 3 inches of rain. I think it’s time I put one out at the barn too—I have a feeling it may have been a little different there.

Sometimes it’s the simple moments—a basket of fresh herbs, happy cats, and a garden after the rain—that remind you just how special this place is. 🌿

Pollinator Week Day 1: Black Swallowtail Butterflies

Today is the first day of Pollinator Week, an annual celebration dedicated to raising awareness about the important role pollinators play in our ecosystems and what we can do to support them.

This mission aligns closely with what we believe at The Garden at Pinehurst Farm. Healthy gardens aren’t just about beautiful flowers—they’re about creating habitat for the creatures that depend on them.

Throughout the week, we’ll be sharing pollinators, plants, and garden lessons from here at Pinehurst.

Today, we’re celebrating one of my favorites: the Black Swallowtail Butterfly.

Many gardeners panic when they find these caterpillars on their parsley, dill, fennel, or other plants in the carrot family. And honestly, they can devour a plant surprisingly quickly!

But those chewed leaves are part of something beautiful.

Over the years, we’ve watched Black Swallowtails lay eggs in our garden, raise their hungry caterpillars on our herbs, form chrysalises, and eventually emerge as stunning butterflies. Earlier this year, we moved several caterpillars into a protected screen enclosure where they could complete their life cycle safely away from birds and other predators. We have done this for a few years now and it’s so rewarding to watch them do their thing.

The bright green caterpillars with black bands and yellow spots are the final stage before they transform. Soon they form a chrysalis and begin one of nature’s most incredible transformations.

A garden doesn’t have to be perfect to be healthy.

Sometimes a parsley plant becomes a nursery.
Sometimes a few leaves become a meal.
And sometimes, if we’re lucky, those leaves become butterflies.

Have you ever found Black Swallowtail caterpillars in your garden?

🦋🌿

☀️ Good morning and happy first Monday of summer!

Our kids are officially on summer break, and Bristol schools will be joining them soon. Sending lots of positive energy to all the teachers, staff, and students heading into their final week. You’ve almost made it!

This morning I walked into the greenhouse and was greeted by our first sunflower bloom of the season. 🌻 These sunflowers reseed themselves every year from what started as a beautiful little gardening “mistake,” and now I look forward to seeing them return.

Meanwhile, our six Black Swallowtail caterpillars are thriving. They’ve pretty much mowed down every dill plant we’ve given them in their screened enclosure! We keep them protected from birds because, let’s be honest, they look exactly like the kind of snack Timon and Pumbaa would enjoy. 🤣 This morning I planted them a fresh dill plant because they completely finished the last one.

If you’re out and about this week, stop by our self-serve farmstand and see what’s new. We have vegetable starts, herbs, houseplants, succulents, beautiful container gardens, seasonal flowers, and a few Pinehurst finds waiting for you.

I’ll be around quite a bit this week, generally from 9:30 AM–1:30 PM. If you’d like to stop by, feel free to send me a message or text/call me at 860-845-8463.

If you’ve been curious about Pinehurst, are considering the space for a future event, or just want to stop by and say hello, you’re always welcome. 🌿

Whether you spent the day together, shared memories, or simply held someone special in your heart, we hope the weekend brought you moments of joy, connection, and gratitude.

Wishing you all a happy Father’s Day from our family at Pinehurst Farm. 🌿🐾🚣‍♀️

🌿 First harvest of the season! 🌿

I finally got to use my harvesting basket for the first time this year, and it was filled with some of the first fresh-cut flowers from our gardens.

We just stocked the farmstand with petite flower arrangements featuring a mix of flowers and herbs grown right here at Pinehurst. Each arrangement is a little different, filled with whatever is blooming beautifully that day.

💐 $6 each or 2 for $10

These won’t last long, and quantities are limited as our cut flower garden begins to wake up for the season.

Thank you to everyone who continues to stop by our little self-serve farmstand. Every purchase supports our gardens, workshops, and the growing community we’re building here at The Garden at Pinehurst Farm.
