This beautiful piece comes from one of the many tribal cultures of Africa. Made from various old European trade beads, the colorful expression and stylistic use of shapes speaks volumes about the hands that made this necklace. Abeadaday!
These carved, tremolite Jade cicadas remind us that there is always new life after an ending. Crafted in China during the Qing dynasty (1644-1912), these little creatures have had a long history of representing rebirth and longevity. In real life, the cicada can spend years (up to 17) under ground, emerging in a glorious metamorphosis’ by shedding their exoskeleton, flying off and “singing” their song of life.

Abeadaday!
One of the oldest symbols embraced by our early cultures was the cowrie shell. It represented life, wealth, health, happiness and the sacred feminine, among others. This simple Gastropod is considered our first form of currency and was traded throughout the kingdoms for thousands of years. If you didn’t have the real thing, you could make them from available materials. Carved from bone, these ancient beads were made to represent the sacred cowrie shell.

First created in Venice during the 16th century and known as “lattimo,” milky-white colored glass was intended to mimic porcelain. This batch of translucent and opaque, wound, “eye” style beads are small examples of this classic color that became massively popular during the Victorian Gilded Age.

Abeadaday!
Named after the city of Kiffa in Mauritania, West Africa, these hand made beads were crafted by woman artisans from the late 1800’s into the next century. Made from crushed bottles, pottery shards and old beads, decorated with small steel needles and fused in an open fire, these are known as a powder-glass style bead. They were historically worn as protective amulets, to protect against evil, ensure healing and enhance fertility.

For thousands of years, the unique purple hues and vibrant energies of amethyst have been revered by cultures around the world. The name is derived from the Ancient Greek word “amethystos” meaning “not intoxicated (drunk).” This stone is associated with spiritual awareness and these old, carved beads may reflect that in their lotus-like appearance.

These Bohemian glass beads were made about a century ago and have been treasured by various African cultures ever since. Known as Ethiopian wedding beads, their fun, colorful and unique shapes have endeared them to many. Made with the molded-glass technique, these represent a new age in bead making.

These old beads have a bit of a mystery about them. Aged naturally and showing signs of use, they are of the wound glass style and have very obvious, indented “eye” designs pressed into them. Uncommon and unusual, the cobalt color speaks of a strong knowledge of glass making and their design shows thought and creativity. Oh, if they could only talk…
