Made with local sand & salts from the Dead Sea, these coarse glass beads have been a trade item into Egypt and Africa for generations. Known as “Hebron” beads because of their place of origin in Palestine, they have been documented back into the 1800’s. However, glass making in this area dates back many centuries. These blue examples are rare -as yellow and green tend to be most common.

Japan has a long history of glass making that spans centuries. Used for decorative purposes and beads, glass was an inspiration from both inside and outside its borders. However, after World War II, glass work was revived in Hiroshima as a healing art with the intention of bringing bright colors back to a devastated society. These inspired & “fruity” looking pieces are good examples.

This account is a humble attempt to spread the beauty and history of these little objects, to keep one of our earliest creations, practices, & ways of communing with the world alive in the shared story of our human existence. The eyes have it… they always have. This batch of glass beads was made primarily in Italy, however there is one import from another source. What they all have in common are the white dots (often called “eyes”) that are symbolic of protection. For centuries various cultures have put merit into the belief of eyes as shielding talisman- after all, they are windows to the soul.

Here’s an eclectic mix that came out of a box found at an estate sale. It consists of beads from many time periods -ancient BCE’s to 20th century, made primarily of stone & glass and from many of parts of the world. How they all ended up on one piece of cotton cord in the bottom of a bin is a story that will remain a mystery.
