Abeadaday,
This detail of an old, handmade child’s hat comes from China. It is specific to the Miao tribe of the southern mountain region who can trace their lineage back thousands of years. This piece is embellished with small, coin-silver ornaments of protective spirits, festive bells and symbols of abundance. Hand crafted by family members, this talismanic garment is a beautiful gift to start life with.

Abeadaday,
Here’s another beautiful style glass bead made in Europe (Italy) during the 17-1800’s. These were produced in many sizes, from small seed beads to large rounds. They are in the family of “white heart” beads -called such because of their white center (although older ones can have yellow cores). Beads such as these became very popular within the trade networks and have been widely accepted in cultures around the world.

Abeadaday!
Simple and satisfying. Small glass beads like these became known as “pony” beads in the Americas because various fur trappers who ventured into the uncharted territories carried many strands on their pack animals for trade with the indigenous people. Made in Europe during the 17-1800’s, this style bead found homes not just in America, but around the world.

Buttons, beads and baubles are all uniquely human. Like us, they often have a personality that seems to be different from each other… perhaps because the old ones were made by hand and were part of the people who possessed them. This old Jade button has most likely shared in laughter and tears over the years -a partner in a life well lived.

Small, glass “seed” beads were made by the millions and traded into cultures around the world. They have been used to embellish just about everything, adding color and beauty through the hand of their crafter. This old leather moccasin is a great example of the fine work made in the Americas. What seems like simple patterns, is a specific language that shares much information about the people who made and wore these.

Produced in Venice during the 17-1800’s, these intricate, multi-layered, rosetta patterned beads have been traded throughout the world. Sometimes referred to as “Awaleh” beads because of their African connections, they were also popular with the indigenous peoples of America.

Abeadaday!
The artists in China have a long history of being able to capture the true essence of what inspires their creations. This strand of beads is a good example of this. What look like round, white Jade beads are actually made of glass. White Jade is considered the purest of all Jades, and although most folks aspire to have some, it is often expensive and difficult to obtain. This old strand of Peking glass embodies it well.

Abeadaday!
Old European trade beads have found their way into cultures around the world. First through the barter system during the age of colonial expansion (15-1900’s). Then they often get passed on to family, friends and community members locally. Eventually, many end up back in the market where collectors and crafters purchase them. This old grouping could tell many stories about its journey.
