My new album The Seasons (1914-18) is out next Friday 6 Nov. Here’s another clip from ‘Lights Out’, performed by the amazing - recorded on a freezing winter’s day in St Michael’s Highgate, the highest church in London. This beautiful church, consecrated in 1832, was built for £8,171, which would be considered something of a bargain these days.

My new album The Seasons (1914-18) is out on 6 November. Here’s a clip from ‘Lights Out’, performed by the amazing - It’s the last movement of Winter in Arras, 1917, and a setting of Edward Thomas’s poem of the same name.  Edward Thomas enlisted in July 1915, at thirty-seven, with a wife and three children and no obligation to go. He wrote “Lights Out” in November 1916, weeks before leaving for France. He was killed at Arras on Easter Monday, 9 April 1917 - the first day of the battle.

Apparently, you’re all but level with the cross on the top of St Paul’s when you walk in the front door.   Also full marks for the knitwear on display …

My new album The Seasons (1914-18) is out on 6 November. Here’s ‘Snow’, performed by the amazing It’s the first movement of Winter in Arras, 1917, a setting of Edward Thomas’s poem “Snow”.  In the gloom of whiteness,
In the great silence of snow,
A child was sighing
And bitterly saying: “Oh,
They have killed a white bird up there on her nest,
The down is fluttering from her breast.”
And still it fell through that dusky brightness
On the child crying for the bird of the snow.

Thanks to the heroic Connaught Brass whose terrific performance of ‘A Clearer Light’ from Summer in London 1914 is streaming everywhere today. It’s the last single from The Seasons (1914-18) which is out Nov 6. Really magical playing. Thank you. 💙🎹

The third single from The Seasons is out on 16 October — A Clearer Light, performed by the glorious . It’s the first movement of Summer in London, 1914, and was recorded in the beautiful St John the Evangelist, Upper Norwood. The stunning red-brick Gothic Revival church was built in the 1880s by J. L. Pearson, and had major structural restoration after being hit by several WWII doodlebug bombs.

The third single from The Seasons is out on 16 October — A Clearer Light, performed by the glorious . It’s the first movement of Summer in London, 1914, and the first music you hear on the album, written after Alice Meynell’s poem “Summer in England, 1914”.  On London fell a clearer light;
Caressing pencils of the sun
Defined the distances, the white
Houses transfigured one by one,
The ‘long, unlovely street’ impearled.
O what a sky has walked the world!

The 4th Season has been recorded. Nearly two years after the idea of 4 chamber groups, and four new works for the Seasons started to emerge - we’ve reached this milestone with the amazing Galliard Ensemble recording “Spring in Steep, 1915” in St Bartholomew’s Church, Orford where Britten premiered and recorded much of his later work.

It’s been a long and inspiring road, with & all surpassing my already high expectations of them, both musically, and also being very funny to spend time with. You’re legends all.

Although the project began with a literary structure, the illness and passing of my Mum in the middle of it and the comfort I found in poetry has meant that the whole project is now framed around remembrance texts from WW1. There are key poems from Edward Thomas, Alice Meynell, and May Wedderburn Cannan, and the Seasons actually play in reverse, from Summer 1914 to Autumn 1918.

The album will be out by the end of the year, and I’m hugely grateful to everyone wrangling the multiple groups, locations and recordings.
